VBox status code: -1908 (VERR_VM_DRIVER_NOT_INSTALLED).

Post by barney_vbox »

Using vbox 1.5.6 on Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy).
Tried to upgrade to vbox 1.6.2.
Installation failed, saying that 1.5.6 was blocking the install (conflicting packages)
Used Synaptic to remove 1.5.6, after attempting to save the VMs.
Tried to install 1.6.2 again - again failed.
Went back to Synaptic to reinstall 1.5.6.
I can start the manager, but any attempt to run any VM results in the error quoted in the title of this post.
Search on the error turned up several .h files with the error message, but nothing I could find relevant to correcting it.
Tried to reinstall from the 1.5.6 DEB package, but same error.
I have no idea what packages are conflicting - I don't speak C/C++, so can't compile from source.
Has anyone any clue as to what I can do to get vbox active again?

I went back and did a complete removal, via Synaptic, of every item relating to vbox.
I then used the DEB installer to install the PUEL version of 1.6.2.
It was not added to Applications | System Tools, nor to any other menu, but I did a search on virtualbox, double-clicked the entry that was found, and vbox is up and running again, no loss of VMs or configurations.
Still don't know where it is (yet), but I can run it.

Unfortunately, the upgrade did not accomplish what I had hoped - I still cannot see USB drives, nor can I see the USB wireless card - but at least I can run critical Win apps again.

You can connect to Internet, sharing Drivers via Shared Folders.

Please refer to User Manual, written step by step there.

For USB search User Manual for the Term "USBFS".

Try this first before not reading and asking again.

If then are problems again, post with details like input, messages etc.

Stefan, I didn't say I cannot see the Web ... I simply cannot see the USB wireless card, nor can I see USB thumb drives.

What Ive found in the user manual has not worked - on this system - to date. Nor have any of the workarounds that I've found online.

Don't presume that I've not read the manual because of the question. The question that was originally posted did include input, messages, etc. And nothing I've read in the maual, to date, covered that particular problem.

The second post was not a question, it was a statement of the resolution of the original problem, made so that no one would need to work up a brain sweat about the problem. The comments about USB were just that: casual comments, not questions.

As for future questions, it's not likely I'll ask any here. I don't care for pedantry, nor for elitism, and I've seen a bunch of it while trying to research my original problem, almost as bad as the Ubuntu forums.
