Won't install, tried lots, searched everywhere.

Hidy. I am unable to install VitualBox. It begins to install, reaches Copying Files then says Rolling back, and exits, with error message. The error message offers no advice as to the specific problem.

VirtualBox 5.0.12-104815-Win.exe
System is Windows 7 Professional x64.

Done so far:

1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Network: Changed "MaxNumFilters" from 8 to 20 (decimal)
2. Uninstalled Windows Virtual PC (KB958559)
3. Checked that there are no virtuals in DeviceManager\Network
4. Disconnected network cable just before installing
5. Pause Kaspersky antivirus just before installing
6. Run VirtualBox as Administrator

I've also run "Repair this computer" using my Windows 7 installation disk, and re-run three hardware Virtualisation testers; AMD's tool, Microsoft's Hardware-assisted Detection Tool, and Securable. All three confirm compatibilty. I also ran a full disk scan using CHKDSK including seeking bad clusters. No problems.

1,3,4 and 6 are those suggestions I found online, all others are my ideas in desperation. I have tried installing while Windows Virtual PC was installed, no difference. Likewise, I have tried installing while connected to the network.

There have never been any entries in DeviceManager\Networks, though there was, once, a Virtual USB entry, which I uninstalled, just in case; it has not returned during subsequent attempts to install VirtualBox.

It might be worthwhile pointing out that despite installing both Windows XP Mode, and Windows Virtual PC, apparently successfully, XP Mode failed to run.

I know I've not been alone experiencing installation problems, but most seem to succeed using one or more of the offered suggestions: 1,3,4,6 above.

Any other ideas\suggestions gratefully received.
Thanks.

Perhaps try checking the md5 sum of your download.

Also, since your problem is with the Windows installer (MSI), you should Google for how to enable and retrieve the MSI error log.

Hello, and thanks for replying. Complicated. It just installed.

While chasing another, unrelated problem (empty "Turn Windows Features On or Off" window), I downloaded and ran a Microsoft Package fix - Windows6.1-KB947821-v34-x64.msu. Following the next instructions to examine a Windows log file, I found a lot of packages and MUMS(?) were corrupt, and I noticed they all referred to Virtualisation - can't remember the exact wording. The next step was to be to locate the entries in the Registry and delete those that hadn't been fixed, but there were so many, and I could not achieve the Permissions to allow me to delete anything, so I did a System Restore. I then ran that Fix again, checked the log file again, and nothing was out of order.

I then did all the things I mentioned in my post again before installing VirtualBox, and bingo. Frankly I was gobsmacked.

I wonder if that fix might help others. I didn't come across it in my searches for VirtualBox installation problems. Maybe it could be posted somewhere as a possible solution.

It was pure serendipity. I had gone into Features to look for something else, noticed that Gadgets was ticked, and as Microsoft have pronounced Win 7 Gadgets unsound security wise, I unchecked it. On reboot the installing screen hanged utterly, and I was forced to reboot a few times before I got to the Desktop. It was after that that I lost all entries in Features, and did the System Restore. If I hadn't had that hang and reboot into the Features problem, I might still be asking for help installing Virtual Box.
Wierd.

Cheers.

However, since posting the above, I installed Linux Mint 17.2 under VirtualBox. It appeared to instmall, and I got to the Desktop, but only Menu works. After that no menu choices work. Everything else throws up error messages - can't connect, whatever. Uninstalled VirtualBox. Disappointed.
