While attempting to perform a network installation of Windows 8.1 onto a vdi set up as the primary hard drive, a "critical error" occurred and the dialog box said I should provide the attached log and png files in seeking help. The log file is too large to upload, the forum tells me, so I have zipped it and then attached the zip file. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide!

Good thinking!
The log that you attached wrote:00:00:00.850464 Guest OS type: 'Windows7_64'
Not so good thinking. You need to change the template of your guest to Windows 8.1. VM Settings, General, Basic, Type & Version. They should match what you're trying to run, i.e. in your case Windows, Windows 8.1 (32- or 64-bit depends on your installation).

How come the VM is called "VM_Win7"? That seems like an unusual name choice for a Windows 8.1 VM. OTOH the screenshot shows an error which is typical of trying to install Windows 8.1 using a Win8 or Win7 template. Were you upgrading a Win7 VM?
