Drag and drop doesn't work in guest after installing Gst Add

Post by Ramoncio »

I have been testing Virtualbox for some months and it works really great, very good job guys!
But I have found a strange issue, and can't find a solution here.
Last days I am testing VBox with windows 7 (64bit) embedded guests.
In my latest builds, everything works fine until I install Guest Additions, then drag and drop (in windows explorer and desktop) stops working completely in guest. If I uninstall Guest Additions then it starts working again.
Also I get some errors trying to run some exe files (mainly installers) from host shares. But if I copy the directory to my desktop or some network share, then the same installers work just fine.
It happens with v. 5.0.10 and also with latest 5.0.12 (with their respective Guest Additions versions), I'll try with older/stabler versions.
I haven't had these problems with Windows 7/8 guests, maybe something related with Windows Embedded. If I install that same image to a real computer, drag and drop works just fine.
Any ideas of what might be happening?

Thanks in advance

In this case that isn't possible. Drag and drop was introduced in 5.0.0, and it is later (maintenance) versions of this which should be more stable.

It would be useful if you mentioned what your host is. Even more useful would be a VM log file: With the VM fully shut down, right click it in GUI. Select "Show Log" and save "VBox.log" (ONLY) to a zip file. Attach the zip here.

Wow fast answer, thanks! :-)

Please note I don't mean drag and drop from/to host/guest, it stops working inside the guest, to drag and drop files and shortcuts in desktop or explorer, but only with Guest Additions installed, when I remove them it works again.

My current host has W8.1 and the guest is Windows 7 embedded.
I'll try to capture the log later today, to see if that helps.

Sounds like a bug. You should probably raise a BugTracker ticket to report this.

Here is the log file attached, it wasn't too big but I zipped it anyway.

I just opened a ticket in bug tracker #14949.

I'll try with a linux host later, and I think I have an older VirtualBox version there (4.2/4.3?), and see what happens.

If a bug has been introduced, I'm willing to bet that it will have been introduced when Drag and Drop support was added, i.e. in v5.0.0. You can't have a conflict before that, so of course testing 4.2.x or 4.3.x won't really tell us anything we weren't already pretty sure of.

Also, the bug will be in the GAs, so older (pre v5) GAs won't show the problem - there's no need to replace the host software.

FWIW, It only seems to affect Windows Embedded. None of my Windows guests have the issue.

Yes, I have only had this problem with Windows 7 embedded guests, other Window guests work fine, I have tried them all, even nt4. Mmm, maybe I had an older host version when I tried other MS guest OSes, not sure about that.
I have also tried with a usb mouse with same results, no dnd with Guest Additions installed.
The pointing device used by default was USB Tablet, so for a test I just changed to USB multitouch tablet (as the W8.1 host has a multitouch screen) and drag and drop works but only when i use my fingers, not with the integrated touchpad nor with the usb mouse, and I have tried for a few minutes with different clicks durations but no way. But with my finger works every time... this is weird.

I just imported the vdi into a VBox 4.3.30 Linux Mint host. Drag and drop doesn't work in the guest w7embedded 64bit with GA 5.0.12 installed, but it works when I uninstall them. And it stops working again when I reinstall GA 4.3.30, the proper ones for the host.
Multitouch doesn't seem to work in Linux out of the box as it did with the Windows 8.1 host, but touch screen in the host does work.

I would suggest filing a bug report on Bugtracker.

include a vbox.log for one of the guests where it failed to drag n drop.

I restarted again the Win 8.1 64bits 5.0.12 host, with the same vdi, and drag and drop is working fine!!
Then I upgraded GA from 4.3.30 to 5.0.12 and it still works!!
I'll post the log, so maybe devs can figure out what happened here. :-)
