Dungeon Siege Legends of Aranna

Hi all. I like the original old game (not the Steam version), Dungeon Siege Legends of Aranna. It won't run under Win 8.1 (which I have on my PC) because of compatibility issues. So, I thought to install and run it under VirtualBox using Win XP as the Guest. I installed Legends of Aranna, but when I try to run it, I get the following error message.

A fatal error has occurred and the app must shut down.
Unable to enumerate any DirectDraw devices installed on this system.
[Note: This error can occur if another application has exclusive control of the display. For example, NetMeeting’s desktop sharing feature may be enabled or you are trying to run this app through a remote desktop in Windows XP or Terminal Server. It can also occur if your hardware does not support 3D acceleration or if your video driver does not properly support DirectX 7.]

I installed DirectX 8 on the Guest Win XP hoping that would enable DirectDraw, but no luck. I also ran DxDiag, and it tested DirectDraw and DirectDraw passed the tests run by DxDiag.
I hope someone has a solution? I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.
P.S. I looked at the game's box, and the game needs Win 98/ME/2000/XP, and needs Video Card 8MB/3D. Is the error message saying that the Virtual Box video driver is NOT a "DirectDraw" device (i.e. the virtual video card is incapable of implementing DirectDraw) despite the fact that the DxDiag DirectDraw tests were passed? Just looking for answers, or a usable work-around. Thanks again.
