Vb can't find the VM files on samba share

Post by »

I'm running VB 5.0.10 on a Windows 7 64bit with 16gb ram and a 128GB SSD drive. Because of the small SSD i put all the VB guest files on a samba share.

This works for Windows, Ubuntu and even Android guest systems. Till last night. My goal was to setup a Debian Wheezy guest system on a CF card in VB. I found a tutorial on-line how to do that and it worked. I installed Debian onto a CF from the iso I downloaded from Debian.org and worked on the Debian system all night, restarted several times while working on it, everything seemed to work great. Today I liked to worked on the Debian guest system some more but wen I started it it could not find the semi virtual drive on the network share which connects the CF card to the guest system which working 100% last night. I forget to start VB with admin rights which was needed to mount the semi virtual drive like it said in the tutorial so i restarted VB with admin rights now all my guest systems can't find their virtual hd's anymore ???
What is going on here? Last night it worked really well I was happy as a child I could work on the debian CF system this way restarted several times. Even setup a bonding network of two virtual network interfaces wow amazing all this works I was totally happy and amazed I could do all this with VB. Till today all these problems started happening.

I would like the great Debian system working again like it did last night.

I know there are many posts with the same problem on this board and other boards. I tried the suggestions i found but nothing helped. I delete the VM and made a new one this worked one time. I renamed the prev file to xbox file no joy

Help please!

Please make absolutely sure that "Z:\" is mapped and working BEFORE you launch VirtualBox Manager. Make sure that there are no resident processes left over from a previous run, that is open Task Manager and make sure that no VBox* is running on the background.
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
Do NOT reply with the "QUOTE" button, please use the "POST REPLY", at the bottom of the form.
If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

Z: is and was always accessible. I pushed the refresh button several times while the share is accessible, it doesn't change anything. Wen I remove the Debian Jessie guest and start Virtualbox without Windows admin right all the other guest systems work again. Virtualbox needs Windows administrator rights to be able to access the usb drive (CF card) which is also accessible. This is not what I say its in this tutorial. And at first the Debian guest system did work. I worked on it the first night rebooted the guest system several times with no problems. Till the next day this problem showed up. I removed the Debian guest and started a new one this working again till again i rebooted the host system. Then i created again a fresh Debian system but this time this also didn't work anymore so now i don't know how to get the debian system te work again.

From "this tutorial"…
As this option isn’t exposed in the interface and requires some digging, it may not always work perfectly. It worked fine with Ubuntu 14.04 on a Windows host, but don’t be surprised if you encounter problems with some configurations.
