Linux guest cannot reach internet

Post by jpsebasti »

My Virtualbox host is Windows 7 Service Pack 1 64bit
Virtualbox version installed on this Windows 7 host is 5.0.10
I created a new VM and set it up with NAT and HOST-ONLY network adapters.
I then booted the VM and Installed Oracle Enterprise Linux 7.2 as a guest OS

I start the guest and then log in and bring up Firefox.
Any attempts to reach the internet never go anywhere. yahoo.com or google.com simply return nothing

I'm not much of a network or sysadmin but here is what I checked so far:

On my Windows Host:
I have a VirtualBox Host-Only network with IP 192.168.56.1 as expected
My Windows Ethernet Adapter IP is 134.253.59.xxx
My DNS server is 134.253.181.xx

Oh yes and I've tried Unbuntu and Unbuntu Desktop (both 64 bit) as guests and have the same problem with those guests as well. No internet connectivity.
I do have internet connectivity from my Windows Host.

On my OEL 7.2 VM I can ssh to the dns server so I know that the VM is reaching out to the network on which my Windows Host resides.
I'm wondering if there might be firewall issues on the OEL 7.2 VM preventing the web connection but not sure how to troubleshoot it.

Any suggestions
