Ubuntu 14.04 with audio controller Intel HD Audio?

Post by Andy1971 »

Hey there,

I am trying to get some sound from my Linux guest with the Intel HD Audio controller, but it doesn't work. So first of all some information:

Virtualbox 5.0.10 r104061 with USB Extensions
Host: Windows 7
Guest: Ubuntu 14.04.3 (with installed guest additions)

Now to the background why I want to use the Intel HD Audio... The ICH AC97 controller works fine, but with one exception. Short after starting the VM my Lync phone Polycom CX600 (not bridged to the guest system) shows me a call from "Computeraudio". To interrupt this call I can shut down the VM or I can disconnect the USB connection between my host computer and the phone and then reconnect them. After this both works fine and as expected. After some experiments I found out that it doesn't switch to Computeraudio when I don't use the ICH AC97 audio controller. But I didn't get any sound with the Intel HD Audio or the Soundblaster controller.

So, does anybody got the Intel HD Audio to work with the above settings?

Many thanks in advance.

Just about all Linux distros use ICH AC97 controllers. You might ask on the Ubuntu forums if it's possible to use Intel HD controllers.

I spoke too soon. I just switched the audio controller in my Ubuntu 14.04.3 guest to Intel HD and the audio works fine.

Thank you for your quick reply. I know that it is not a problem to get physically Intel HD Audio controllers get to work under Ubuntu. It seems to be a special problem with the Virtualbox Intel HD audio controller within the guest system. So thats why I am asking here for someone who got this to work. I think here is the chance higher to find someone :-)

Really? With the actual Virtualbox on Windows 7 host?

I don't have a Windows 7 host, just OSX hosts, Ubuntu 15.10 and Linux Mint 17.3 hosts, and a Windows 10 host. I haven't checked all of them yet. The one I tried was on a OSX host.

Just checked LM 17.3 guest on my Windows 10 host, audio works fine with Windows DirectSound and Intel HD Audio selected. That doesn't mean your Lync phone will work.

Thank you for your tests... I just try a new VM with a newly installed Ubuntu 14.04.3. Lync phone at the host is only affected when I use the ICH AC97 controller.

Just resolved a test with a new VM (with Intel HD Audio controller) with a freshly installed Ubuntu 14.04.3 (Ubuntu-Desktop)... and again, no sound at all.

With the VM fully shut down, right click its icon in the VirtualBox Manager, select "Show Log" and save "VBox.log" to a zip file. Attach the zip here.

Sorry, I had to do something. I'm not seeing a problem. Are you saying you have no sound at all or just with the Lync plugged in?

Just to check something, run alsamixer in the guest terminal and make sure the volume settings are up.

No problem :-)

Surely I tried with unplugged Lync phone and also I checked the volume settings (on both sides, guest and host). As soon as I activate the ICH AC97 controller (and boot the VM) sound is working like a charm.

I attached a screenshot where you can see the alsamixer, pavucontrol and the standard mixer. How does it look on your side?

as in there is no attached screen shot.

btw, you do know your phone will be captured by either the guest or the host. It's not going to work on both. There is no pass through so to speak.
