The problem is that if to attach to Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 64Bits Desktop guest a USB external storage device of one of following types*
a) HDD in disk docking station
b) SanDisk USB pen drive
c) SanDisk SD-Card adapter
the Ubuntu guest does not detect it. It means, lsusb -v does not list the device, Ubuntu Disks app does not detect it,
Ubuntu GUI does not offer the external storage for use.
External storage devices of other kind are not available for testing.
I am on the search if the root cause is on VirtualBox or rather on the guest side.
*) All these devices support USB 3.0, also the host (physical host machine and OS).
The devices are detected by host OS without any problem.
At the point of time of device attachment to guest, the VM's log generates following lines

Is this all what Virtual Box has to do on external USB device attachment to guest?

With the VM fully shut down, right click it in the GUI. Select "Show Log" and save "VBox.log" to a zip file. Attach the zip here.

Me believes it should be possible to answer the asked question without access comprehensive logs.
The log section around the point of time of external storage device attachment to the virtual machine is attached to opening post.

The guests log file is mandatory if you would like any assistance. If you do not want to post one that is of course up to you but very little can be done without one.

Re: USB 3.0 external storage devices not detected by guest
And to add to that, I've been seeing lately people obfuscating their VM details (like they live in the former Eastern Germany and Stasi is after them). There is absolutely nothing sensitive in the logs. If you post a log please don't obfuscate it. We have to guess the missing details and that helps no one.
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
Do NOT reply with the "QUOTE" button, please use the "POST REPLY", at the bottom of the form.
If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

I like the word "obfuscating".

Re: USB 3.0 external storage devices not detected by guest
Problem solved during troubleshooting was in progress.
Actually no changes in system made. Don't know what helped.
Troubleshooting session included a.o. the fresh installation of Ubuntu 15.04 Desktop 64Bits in current host setup,
testing with Ubuntu LiveCD image 140.4 and 15.04, testing usb storage device detection when booting up, and on the fly while guest in the full run,
tools lsusb, guest's System Logs, VB virt. mach. logs.
Actually, as of now I use the VB context menu (host key shortcut, v.m. in full screen mode) to attach
the external storage devices to the v.m. And.... it works!
