Windows XP reboots when i try to install software

Post by Pyras »

Hey guys i have a question,

im already running VM as i need it for programming at university.

BUT i tried to set up a Windows XP in order to be able to play old games on it, since most of them arent compatible to win7 / 8 /10.

So far so good the VM is set up without any trouble but now when i try to install those games from DVD the Windows will give me a Bluescreen for about 1/2 second and then restart.
I installed Win XP x64 on my Win10 x64 host pc and i load the DVD via "Host Drive" (my physical DVD drive). The game installer does launch and stay without any problem and I put in my CD-Key and yet nothing strange happens.
The second i click "Start Installation" the bluescreen flashes and then the Windows VM reboots.

Im using Win10 x64 (host)
I run Win XP x64 SP1 (guest)

hope you can help me

What does "DVD" mean? Are you referring to an ISO or a physical DVD? Verify the md5 checksum if the former.

I doubt that very much. Nobody installs 64bit XP, because nobody wrote drivers for it. In effect XP always is (and should be installed as) a 32bit OS.

Please post a VM log file. With the VM fully shut down, right click and "Show Log" in the GUI, save "VBox.log" (ONLY) to a zip, and attach the zip here.

Ok im now using Win XP SP3 32 bit.

I could install it without trouble now (wow) :)

Now i try to run the game but it doesnt work.. the launcher goes up, i click "play" and then there appears a new window down at the Taskbar for like 1 - 2 secs and it closes without the game launching. I hear the DVD drive reading the disc though.

So the old problem is solved and i have a new one ;)

Games often have higher video requirements than a virtual machine can give. There's experimental 2D and 3D acceleration plug-ins in the Guest Additions (XP requires that you install the Guest Additions in Safe Mode if you want to use the acceleration plug-ins). But no guarantee they'll work, games sometimes don't do well in VMs.
