SATA Issues with Mac host

We've managed to install win 7 enterprise (64bit) on to our Mac host, but by using an IDE controller.
For some reason every time you put a Virtual Drive on a SATA controller, it won't boot/ it won't deploy on it.
Any ideas why/ what to do next so it works with SATA?
edit: Using Virtual Box 5.0.10 running on Mac OS X El Capitan

My Windows 7 guest .vdi is connected to SATA. I think though it has to be set up that way when you first install Windows. As far as I know you can't move it back and forth.
My guest was set up over 2 years ago.

Even when we first installed it as a SATA controller, it would not deploy. When we changed it over to IDE it deployed.

Beats me. I installed mine from a retail disk.

Just thinking, if you are installing from an OEM disk or a P2V image it may have to be installed on the IDE controller.

is that some sort of criteria? because I've never heard of it before...
We've even tried a normal win 7 iso install and fails too.

OEM disks are notorious for only installing on the hardware it came with. Not just in VMs but on physical machines as well. Dell and HP come to mind.
