Need guidance troubleshooting why VM won't start...

Post by foundroid »

I have 3 Windows Guest VMs that I normally run on Windows Hosts with no problem.

I recently purchased an iMac (running OS X 10.11.1) and installed the latest version of VirtualBox on it to run my VMs. VirtualBox installed fine, but whenever I attempt to start any of the VMs, a new session window pops up for a second and instantly closes and throws an error.

Can anyone help point to where I should be looking on my machine for logs or other helpful information to help track down the issue and resolve?

Any guidance is greatly appreciated.

How did you move the VMs to your Mac?

I have the VMs on an external SSD drive connected via USB to the Mac using the latest version of VirtualBox (5.0.10-104061-OSX). Sorry, I do not have the exact error with me at the moment as I don't have the Mac with me at the moment, but can post that information later this evening.

Failed to open a session for the virtual machine VM Name.

The VM session was closed before any attempt to power it on.

Were any of the VMs saved with a Saved State? If so, delete the saved state.

I don't believe I've ever done an explicit Saved State, so I don't believe so, but there are .vbox-prev files in each VM folder. Is that related?

No, if they were saved in a saved state there would be a saved state folder.

Did you copy the VM folders to your Mac or are they on an external drive? You are running VB 5.0.10?

You will have to un-register the VMs then re-register them if you move them.

YES! YES!! Copying the VMs to Documents on the Mac and then adding them back to VB allowed me to run the VM

although...I'm now getting below, but I think I just need to remove that drive from my VM settings

The shared folder 'Work' could not be set up: Shared folder path 'C:\Work' is not absolute.
The shared folder setup will not be complete. It is recommended to power down the virtual machine and fix the shared folder settings while the machine is not running.

Also, I'm getting the error below. Sounds like something with the drive, but not sure what I need to do...I need to research

The image file '/Users/me/Documents/VMs/VMName C:/Program Files/Oracle/VirtualBox/VBoxGuestAdditions.iso' is inaccessible and is being ignored. Please select a different image file for the virtual DVD drive..

Error ID:
DvdOrFloppyImageInaccessible
Severity:
Warning
