This is the error message I get when I try to install a 64bit OS guest on a 64bit cpu laptop.
=====[snippet]
Laptop -- HP Probook 640
64bit Intel Core I5
OS is windows 8.1
====={snippet]
Error:
"This kernel requires an x86-64 CPU, but only detected and i686 CPU. Unable to boot - please use a kernal appropriate for your CPU."
I have searched on this error message and got about the same results. Every seems to say that the hyper V native to Windows needs to be disabled. Mine is disabled. I installed originally VBox 5 with extensions. When I looked at the VM's available there were only 32bit VM's no 64bit. My CPU is 64bit, there version of the host OS is 64bit and Hyper V is off in the Host OS. I then removed VBox 5 and downgraded to version 4.2.36. Same issue arose. By the way I also have a Linux host Centos7 64bit, VBox 5, VBox 5 extensions and get the same results. Is there a bug in the software or what do I need to do to fix it?
What am I missing?

Moved to "Linux Guests".
Make sure you use a 64bit template when installing a 64bit guest OS. If no 64bit templates are shown then read FAQ: I have a 64bit host, but can't install 64bit guests.
If you need to continue this conversation then provide a VM log file: With the VM fully shut down, right click and "Show Log" in the GUI, save "VBox.log" (ONLY) to a zip, and attach the zip here.
