The installer images or their checksums may be swapped

Post by ttshiko »

I downloaded the installer image 'VirtualBox-5.0.10-104061-Win.exe' and checked its sha256 checksum.
But its value matched with the SHA256SUMS checksum of 'VirtualBox-5.0.10-104061-SunOS.tar.gz'.

In SHA256SUMS,
*VirtualBox-5.0.10-104061-SunOS.tar.gz 3e5ed8fe4ada6eef8dfb4fe6fd79fcab4b242acf799f7d3ab4a17b43838b1e04
*VirtualBox-5.0.10-104061-Win.exe 56eafae439b91ea3c3748f2128b2969ba76983acf821acaa08e043c129b45a89

But, I believe that the following is correct:
*VirtualBox-5.0.10-104061-SunOS.tar.gz 56eafae439b91ea3c3748f2128b2969ba76983acf821acaa08e043c129b45a89
*VirtualBox-5.0.10-104061-Win.exe 3e5ed8fe4ada6eef8dfb4fe6fd79fcab4b242acf799f7d3ab4a17b43838b1e04

I'd like to confirm which is swapped, installer images or checksums, please.

Your editor mis-interprets this file. First comes the checksum, after that comes the file name. The file is UNIX-style, please make sure that your editor sorts the line endings correct.

Where exactly did you get that? Because if I go to https://www.virtualbox.org/download/has ... SHA256SUMS then that's not what it says. Here is a small part of that page:

I can verify that this is what I get when I download the files. In fact the SHA256 that you quote for the SunOS release is actually for the source code of VBox 5.0.10. Are you sure you didn't misread the whole thing?

Again, it's a line ending problem. The file has UNIX-like line endings :-)

I appreciate all of your immediate replies.

As for 'SHA256SUMS', I downloaded it from 'https://www.virtualbox.org/download/has ... SHA256SUMS'.

Owing to all of your reactions, I found I have misread the SHA256SUMS.

Now I could read it as follows and verified successfully:

f8eb98b006093f19d4a87cd3c4064da7a4e6fa1d66f61953513e19adc8ba6631 *VirtualBox-5.0.10-104061-SunOS.tar.gz

56eafae439b91ea3c3748f2128b2969ba76983acf821acaa08e043c129b45a89 *VirtualBox-5.0.10.tar.bz2

Thank you, everybody :)
