2 errors messages while trying to run a virtual machine

Hello all!

Im having troubles with VirtualBox.

First after I installed VirtualBox on my computer (Windows 7 32bits with admin account), when i launch it i get this error:

"VirtualBox - Critical Error. Failed to create the VirtualBoxClient COM object. The application will now terminate. Callee RC: REGDB_E_CLASSNOTREG (0x80040154)"

Image

I modified the compatibility mode of the "VirtualBox.exe" to "compatibility mode windows xp service pack 3" and then VirtualBox does start.
Is it normal to have this problem?

Then I created a virtual machine and when I try to start it I got 2 error messages, the first message is the same as the one before :

"VirtualBox - Critical Error.
Failed to create the VirtualBoxClient COM object.
The application will now terminate.
Callee RC: REGDB_E_CLASSNOTREG (0x80040154)"

Image

Then i got this error message:

"VirtualBox - Error.
Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Ubuntu.
The virtual machine 'Ubuntu' has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 1 (0x1). More details may be available in 'C:\Users\01\VirtualBox VMs\Ubuntu\Logs\VBoxHardening.log'.
Result Code: E_FAIL (0x80004005)
Component: MachineWrap
Interface: IMachine {f30138d4-e5ea-4b3a-8858-a059de4c93fd}"

I had the problem with a previous version of VirtualBox, I installed the last version but its the same ploblems.

I also try different Virtual Machines, to uninstall and reinstall VirtualBox, to delete the ".VirtualBox" folder, desabeling avast, ... but no luck.

I really hope someone can help me.

Thanks!

The first error is an installation failure, e.g. installing for one user account then trying to access the software from another. Installing as user "Administrator" and then running the VM from user "David" would be a popular variation of this. The installer needs to be run using "Run as adminstrator". You should not be logged in as user "Administrator".

The second one is usually a conflict with AV. Unfortinately you failed to provide the VBoxHardening.log which the error mentions (zip it before attaching).

First thanks for your help mpack!

I uninstalled VirtualBox then I reinstalled it from my on my user account called "R1" which is an administrator account.
Then I try to start VirtualBox from the same account and I still get the same errors.

This time I attached the "VBoxHardening.log" ( I had to ZIP it it was too big)

Regards.

Do you have a hacked theme installed on your host? VirtualBox seems to be taking exception to "COMCTL32.DLL". Normally this is a system DLL and therefore should be safe, but you seem to have more than one version of the DLL installed.

No I never installed any windows theme.

COMCTL32.DLL is no mentioned in the log file

I have a dual boot, windows7 and windows xp, could it be the problem?

Look harder at the log. That DLL is mentioned many times near the end.

Yes indeed.

I have many COMCTL32.DLL

1 in C:\Windows\system32\
1 in C:\Windows\erdnt\cache\
6 in C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft.windows.common-controls_......\
9 in folders like C:\Users\R1\Local Settings\Application Data\Application Data\.......\Application Data\Application Data\Temp\Rar$DR00.359\

and this might be interesting :
1 in C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-shell-comctl32-v5_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.17514_none_3ba388ec36399c85\
1 in C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-shell-comctl32-v5_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.18837_none_3b90d8dc36473182\
1 in C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-shell-comctl32-v5_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.23039_none_3c1c4e5d4f63373c\

Thats the problem?

Thanks socratis,

I took a look at it, there are so many people asking for solutions but no help is given.

This forum seems helpless.

You haven't been to too many forums now, have you? ;) Actually, this forum is very helpful, it's just that this specific problem that you're facing is a cat and mouse game. Patience is a virtue. But on the other hand I seriously doubt that you read all the responses and none applied to you. Just a hunch...

I have read all the posts of the topic you sent me the link.(quickly)

Indeed this forum might not be helpless cause I found many topics with solutions from this forum while googling for my problem, and that's why I posted here, I have to admit it. ;)

"Patience is a virtue", yea I was in a hurry...^^
