Copy Paste not working; unsure if Guest Additions installed

Windows 8.1 Host, Virtual Box 5.0.10, Ubuntu 14.03 LTS Server Guest.

Installed using the ISO from the ubuntu website and got the VM running fine. When I tried to install the Guest Additions using the "Insert Guest Additions CD" option I get a "Unable to insert the virtual optical disk". I can confirm that the virtual drive has no media mounted when I boot the guest.

I also tried the alternate CL installation instructions found on this forum by sasquatch; it appeared to install fine but I was still unable to successfully copy & paste from the host to the guest. I am attempting to paste a long CURL statement from a text editor into the CL of the guest.

I've also tried 3 or 4 of the sudo apt-get install commands (don't have them handy but its the various solutions folks have suggested via a Google search) I've attached my log file to this post as well.

FYI - My end goal is installing Matlab on this VM. The only routes I know are using CURL (extremely long statement) and CL installation or using the GUI to install; however I believe I need to get the guest additions for both of these routes.

Thanks in advance!

Please post a VM log file. With the VM fully shut down, right click it in GUI. Select "Show Log" and save "VBox.log" (ONLY) to a zip file. Attach the zip here.

You do have Guest Additions installed :-
VBox.log wrote: 00:00:18.913135 VMMDev: Guest Additions information report: Version 4.3.34 r104062 '4.3.34_Ubuntu'
Unfortunately that's the GAs from the Ubuntu fork (we don't support forks here), plus it's GAs from an older version. I suggest installing current and official GAs. The user manual tells you how.

Updated the GAs to match my VB version and confirmed in the log. After a reboot I am still unable to copy & paste into the VM. Other suggestions for troubleshooting?

FWIW, you can't copy and paste files, only text and image clippings.

I should should clarify; I cannot copy and paste text from a text editor into the VM. When I do Ctrl + V the VM inserts ^V and when I do Shift + Insert the VM inserts ^[[2~

Are you absolutely sure that the Paste shortcut is Ctrl-V? For example, if you want to paste in a Terminal in a Linux guest, there is no such thing as Ctrl-V, but typically it is Ctrl-Shift-V, and if you press Ctrl-V you get ^V, just like in your case, i.e. this is normal. If your application has a menu, take a look for the actual shortcut (usually under Edit).
