Cannot Resume Saved VM (VERR_SSM_UNEXPECTED_DATA)

I get this same error every time I try to restore a VM from a saved state:

ERROR [COM]: aRC=NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005) aIID={d5a1cbda-f5d7-4824-9afe-d640c94c7dcf} aComponent={Console} aText={Unable to restore the virtual machine's saved state from '/home/ian/.VirtualBox/Machines/Virtual XP/Snapshots/{a7e667a3-2708-4461-958a-3740f030e144}.sav'.  It may be damaged or from an older version of VirtualBox.  Please discard the saved state before starting the virtual machine.
