NEWBIE cannot install Linux: nothing happens

Post by Pensionada »

I am new to VirtualBox, so I do apologize for dumb questions.
My host is Windows 10 Pro (1511 10586.14) 32-bits and what I want to do is to run Linux 17.2 Mint Xfce and Windows XP for training purposes. Nothing fancy.
First I installed VirtualBox 5.0.10 r104061 and then the extension pack.

Next, I selected "new" and entered Linux Mint 17.2 Xfce as name, Linux as type and selected Other Linux (32-bit) as version.
Then, I left all default settings as suggested. This went all OK and the entry showed up on the left side of the screen.

Then, I select "start" and the location of the .iso file containing Linux 17.2 which is on the hard drive. Then start. the virtual machine starts. I see the Linux Mint logo and "automatic boot in x seconds"". The x sconds counts down and then ... nothing. Only the Linux Mint logo stays on the screen (see attachment). The left side of the screen indicates that Linux is running but it isn't; nothing happens in the box.

What am I doing wrong?

Please post a VM log file. With the VM fully shut down, right click it in GUI. Select "Show Log" and save "VBox.log" (ONLY) to a zip file. Attach the zip here.

You might want to try changing "Other Linux (32-bit)" to Ubuntu (32-bit) assuming you downloaded the 32 bit version.

You also want to increase the RAM to 512MB.

Yes, that is the solution. Thank you very much.
I will upgrade to 512MB later.

If it were me, I would start over creating a new guest. 256MB is minimal for a modern Linux guest. It will create a 256MB swap file as well which is rather small. I think the default .vdi size is 8GB which once the OS is installed won't leave much room for anything else. I would also increase the VRAM to at least 24MB.

512MB RAM, The rest of the defaults should be fine. Assuming you choose Windows, Windows XP (32-bit).
