Problem VirtualBox and XP

Post by gostemum »

Hello,
I installed "VirtualBox-5.0.10-104061-Win" and "Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-5.0.10-104061" I installed Windows XP on a virtual disk, I am running Windows 10 Family, the entire installation is gone well. My problem, I can not make copy / paste between XP and W10 and W10 to Windows XP , I can not do drag / drop. When I put a USB stick the XP Explorer can not see. Can you advise me, thank you

Did you install the Guest Additions (GAs) in the XP guest? You have to install the GAs and then make sure that in the Settings of your XP guest, under General, Advanced, that Shared clipboard and Drag and Drop are enabled. Preferably Bidirectional.
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.

If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

Hello,
Thank you for your answer, I do not just install the "guest additions" because when I'm in XP I can not access files in W10.
"under General, Advanced, that Shared clipboard and Drag and Drop are enabled. Preferably Bidirectional." IS OK. Dank

Please post a VM log file. With the VM fully shut down, right click it in GUI. Select "Show Log" and save "VBox.log" (ONLY) to a zip file. Attach the zip here.

You have not installed the Guest Additions. You have installed the extension pack, which is not the same thing. The former extends the guest, the latter extends the host.

The Guest Additions are required for the Shared Folder feature to work.

In fact, I'm not wholly convinced that you've installed a guest OS at all :-

You do not have to have access to W10 in order to install the GAs. From the "Devices" menu, select "Insert Guest Additions CD Image...". If the VirtualBox GA installer does not start automatically, navigate to your CD in XP and run the VBoxWindowsAdditions.exe.

@mpack
Don, I agree that this is one of the weirdest messages, but later on in the log the guest is assigned a NAT address, which I think wouldn't happen if there was no one there to ask for an IP, ipso facto, there is a guest installed.

Well, the first part of the logic is probably correct, but the second is a non sequiter I think (since we're doing Latin :-)). All it shows is that there is code in the guest which talks to a DHCP server. It doesn't show that the guest booted from a hard disk. I don't know that Windows setup disks don't have that feature, in fact I can think of scenarios where it would be useful. Plus, from the odd ripoffy name given to the ISO I can't assume it's a standard installer either (it could be slipstreamed).
