USB C adaptor not recognised on windows 7 virtual box
USB C adaptor not recognised on windows 7 virtual box
hi all,
I am having issues with the usb c adaptor on my macbook and hope someone can help.
When running Windows 7 on my macbook 12' via virtual box it will not recognise the USB C adaptor, and therefore i cannot use any usb ports even after installing the extension pack for USB 3.0
Does anyone have any experience with this or is able to provide me with the USB C specific driver for windows?
Here is my setup:
Host Machine: Macbook 12' running El Captain connected with the apple supplied USB C VGA/ USB adaptor
Virtual Box: 5.0.10 with USB 3.0 expansion pack
Virtual Machine: Windows 7 Ultimate thanks!

"USB C"? Do you mean USB 3 a.k.a. xHCI?
Windows 7 has no native support for USB3/xHCI. Google for the Intel xHCI controller drivers - and remember to enable xHCI support in the guest, after installing the extension pack.

FWIW, USB-C = USB 3.1 and is backward compatible.. However, Don is correct that USB 3.0 drivers need installed in the guest. Works fine on mine.

Wait a minute... According to Wikipedia, USB-C is a specification for a hardware connector, not a software protocol like the USB 3.1 which is the newest revision of the USB protocol.

"Waiting"…
Yes, you are correct. The MacBook in question is still using USB 3.0 but a C connector. I'm still on my first cup of coffee. In any case the user needs to install USB 3.0 drivers.

Re: USB C adaptor not recognised on windows 7 virtual box
Hmm. I've heard about (and bought!), lets say, "type B USB connectors". So, I guess that a "type C adapter" would be, lets say, something that converts a type-A connector to type-C. But in that case there's no actual USB device to recognize so the original question still needs clarification.

Re: USB C adaptor not recognised on windows 7 virtual box
As Lou said, the user has confused the USB-C port on his hardware with the USB3 device that he wants to use on the VM. He needs the xHCI drivers as you already told him.

Re: USB C adaptor not recognised on windows 7 virtual box
Okay, I can explain. the MacBook in question has a single USB-C connector. which means you can only connect the power to it. Apple, among others makes adapters so you can plugin the power, USB devices, HDMI devices, etc., etc. It's a hub of sorts.
One example…
USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter

Re: USB C adaptor not recognised on windows 7 virtual box
Hello, has a solution been found for this?
I am using VirtualBox on my Macbook to run a Windows 8.1 virtual machine.
Windows 8.1 can not find the drivers for my attached Apple USB-C VGA Multiport or the SanDisk thumb drive attached to it.
I installed USB 3.0 drivers, but the drivers are still not resolving.
Thanks

OSX El Capitan, MacBook Retina 12-inch, Early 2015 (1st generation)I installed USB 3.0 drivers, but the drivers are still not resolving.
Thanks

Re: USB C adaptor not recognised on windows 7 virtual box
A solution to what? That Win7 doesn't include native USB3 drivers? Only Microsoft can provide a solution for that, which you might say they already did by shipping Windows 8.x, which does have native USB3 support (which you possibly messed up by installing inappropriate non native drivers).
However, a discussion of Win8.x would be off topic here. If you can't find a topic that applies then please start a new one. And I suggest you try to narrow your question to one example: a display connector and a mass storage device could have different reasons for not working.

Re: USB C adaptor not recognised on windows 7 virtual box
FWIW, I don't know what solution you are looking for. To a VirtualBox guest, any USB 3.0 or 2.0 flash drive plugged into the adapter looks the same as if it were plugged into any other USB 3.0 port.carlol wrote:Hello, has a solution been found for this?

Re: USB C adaptor not recognised on windows 7 virtual box
I'd like to chime in because I'm in the same boat. We don't need the drivers for USB, that works fine. What we need are drivers for the USB-C DONGLE. The port itself would work just fine if we could just get windows to recognize the adapter we're using. Personally, I'm trying to use the apple usb-c to usb-a adapter, but windows recognizes it as 'ibridge', telling me there's an error and can't start even though it claims to have the most current drivers.

Re: USB C adaptor not recognised on windows 7 virtual box
If it's just an adapter then it doesn't need a driver. It's a passive connector. In any case if it needed a driver then you'd have to get one from Apple - VirtualBox doesn't "do" drivers for physical devices.
