Hi, I have installed VirtualBox on a Windows 10 64bits v1511 build 10586.11. Easy Created a VM. Great
But when when I try to use the recovery disk of my pc to install the guest operating system (that would be the same as the host, this is a Windows 10 64bits v1511 build 10586.11).
It starts ok:
and then I have an error
help please! Any idea why?

Your VM is a simulated PC. The simulation does not include a hidden HP recovery partition on the (simulated) hard disk. In any case you would be unable to activate Win10 on the VM and another PC (the host) at the same time. One or the other activation would be disabled.

You need a separate license for your VM, and you'll need a proper OS setup DVD, not a recovery disk.

I have noticed that the error has an About link... and when clicking on it it explains that the Product Number and Serial Number of the computer are not what expected... the recovery program expects those of the host computer...

Is there a way to configure the Product Number and Serial Number of the VM? Currently it seems to be set to Product Number: Y63SKU3#ABA and Serial Number:0

Reading section 9.12 of the user manual... maybe with the VBoxManage setextradata command I can change the Product Number and Serial Number of the VM... but there are so many parameters... which one should I configure???

I wouldn't assume that the things it mentions are an exhaustive list of the differences between the VM and the host PC. If I was the programmer this would just be the first couple of things I found. There could be other checks, like having an HP BIOS.

Seriously, this is a waste of time. You won't be able to use the same Win10 license on two PCs, and that definition includes simulated PCs. Attempts to do so might end up with two disabled activations and a phone call to Microsoft to explain what you were up to.

You can buy a new Win10 license to use for future VMs, regarding all of VBox as a single platform (I regard that as legit for my own usage). You can probably also get cheap licenses on eBay for older Windows versions (avoid OEM branded and recovery disks like the one you have, upgrades too). You can also try installing Ubuntu etc - which is completely free, and with Wine can be used to run some Windows applications (though IMHO Wine is best regarded as an independant Win32/Win64 API platform, not a Windows OS clone, as assumption of the latter inevitably leads to disappointment).

Thank you mpack and loukingjr... i feel bad for wasting your time... i will try to see if i succeed changing the Serial and Product numbers... and if not (surely not as you say) I will follow a different alternative (new windows license of ubutu + wine)...

I have managed to change the Serial Number with the parameter "VBoxInternal/Devices/pcbios/0/Config/DmiSystemSerial"... but not managing to change the Product Number...

It's your time that I was talking about, however I see no point in continually reiterating what's already been said. If you find your host deactivated then don't say you weren't warned.
