Ubuntu14.04.03 guest aborts(window7 host) repeatedly

Post by bobw67 »

I am having an Ubuntu guest aborting on login or shutdown several times. I am able to restart the guest after it happens.

Windows message: "the instruction at 0x808226d6 referenced memory at 0xffffffff" , okay to terminate the program.
The VM ends with abort status but Virtualbox continues to run.

Hardware: Toshiba R835-P94 laptop VT-x enabled in bios 4Gb RAM
vb version 4.3.24
host: Windows 7 home premium edition
Guest: Ubuntu 14.04.03
guest additions installed, vbox extensions installed

The only thing that I see in the logs with a non-zero exit code is the following:

from VboxStartup.log:
Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\VBoxGuestPropSvc.DLL [flags=0x0]
d70.3a0: supR3HardNtChildWaitFor[2]: Quitting: ExitCode=0xc0000005 (rcNtWait=0x0, rcNt1=0x0, rcNt2=0x103, rcNt3=0x103, 4929503

ms, the end);
1480.da4: supR3HardNtChildWaitFor[1]: Quitting: ExitCode=0xc0000005 (rcNtWait=0x0, rcNt1=0x0, rcNt2=0x103, rcNt3=0x103, 4930190

ms, the end);

I have attached a zip file that contains the VBox.log and VboxStartup.log

I should note that I have been using this version of Virtual box with Ubuntu 12.04 with no problem for over a year.

Is this problem fixed in later version? If so, which one. Note: I have tried version 4.3.30 but the usb hung the system.

Regards,
Bob

Moved to Linux guests.

You seem to be tuning this VM to just barely fit in available memory. Then you enable 3D acceleration and set a relatively large display size (1607x849 at the largest) with a somewhat limited quota of VRAM. All of this invites instability IMHO. Even weirder is that the log seems to show you gradually tweaking the display size upwards until you get the crash.

Unless you actually need it then try disabling 3D acceleration. And/or reduce the VM's RAM allocation. Make sure you don't get any warnings in the VM settings dialog about the size of your graphics RAM allocation (VRAM).

And just an elegance thing: I try to ensure that I don't use odd display sizes, since as a programmer I know that misaligned accesses cost performance. I aim for a display width and height that's evenly divisible by 32.

I might add that turning off 3D acceleration on modern day Linux desktop systems is possible but not a good suggestion. Doing so will force software rendering and the processor takes a major hit when that happens. I also have seen this issue with certain versions of VirtualBox and was actually fixed in the new releases.
