Try to use .img file with virtual floppy controller but has error '

Code: Select all

Failed to open the disk image file /Users/Bill/Desktop/ALFA.img.
Could not get the storage format of the medium '/Users/Bill/Desktop/ALFA.img' (VERR_NOT_SUPPORTED).
Result Code: VBOX_E_IPRT_ERROR (0x80BB0005)
Component: MediumWrap
Interface: IMedium {4afe423b-43e0-e9d0-82e8-ceb307940dda}
Callee: IVirtualBox {0169423f-46b4-cde9-91af-1e9d5b6cd945}
Callee RC: VBOX_E_OBJECT_NOT_FOUND (0x80BB0001)
Does anybody know how to fix it?

Not at all sure why the floppy controller would open an .img file.

why it would not? There is five supported file extensions where .img exist.

Well two things, I've never actually used the floppy controller in 6 years. :)
But, based on the error message it seems the .img file isn't formatted correctly.

I tried to use this image with VMware Fusion, it work well as virtual floppy image file.

I'm sure someone who uses floppies will be along.

It is not about floppies, it same for other controllers too.
Now i try to add usb controller and try to add .dmg file as a virtual drive file then also has error

Code: Select all

Failed to open the disk image file /Users/Bill/Desktop/ALFA.dmg.

Could not get the storage format of the medium '/Users/Bill/Desktop/ALFA.dmg' (VERR_NOT_SUPPORTED).

Result Code: VBOX_E_IPRT_ERROR (0x80BB0005)

Are you under the impression that every VM platform implements the exact same features in the same way?

VirtualBox supports raw floppy images only. The extension isn't important. You can tell by the file size whether the image is raw or not: e.g. a 1.44MB floppy image should be exactly 1,474,560 bytes. I realize that this is limiting, and no doubt the devs will improve this feature should floppy media experience a resurgence in popularity. Or you could stick to VMWare.

The title of the topic says otherwise. We can only answer the questions asked.

p.s. Stop with the small fonts markup please. Use "Code" to bracket computer text output that you want to highlight.

changed topic to general title. Sorry for small fonts markup, try to use code tag.

Why don't you just tell us directly what type of file it is? That will determine what kind of storage controller can use it as media. You certainly can't mount floppy media under an hdd controller.

Note that "img" is part of a filename, and is not strongly associated with any particular file type.

I changed the topic title back to its original text - the question in the first post clearly asks about mounting a floppy image in the floppy controller. Editing that post now would make a nonsense of the ensuing discussion.

it's usb stick with .key files.
Now i tryed to make new image file from usb stick with Disk Utility. New Image/Image from then use my usb. Its make image file with .img extension. But when i try to connect it to usb controller as a image file then it doesn't work! Same error!

Ok. its ok. Anyway, i can't use any virtual controller with .dmg or .img file, its not mounting to usb controller neither to floppy controller.

The only controller I'm aware of that will mount .dmg files is the CD/DVD controller. You certainly can't use it as a virtual drive. If you can find somewhere in the user manual that says you can let us know.

If you create a valid media file, you can mount it in a VM on the appropriate controller. I am not an OS X user and can't comment on how you can use "Disk Utility" correctly.

A USB stick can be accessed as a shared folder - if you only need access to the contents. If you are trying to boot from the USB stick then that would be a different matter. VirtualBox does not support booting from USB, and I'm not familiar with any tools which can easily convert a bootable USB stick to a bootable anything else. If I was doing this on a Windows PC I would try imaging the USB stick using Disk2VHD (whole disk image of course, otherwise the image will not be bootable). If you have access to a PC then you could try that too. That gives you the disk in VHD format, which is mountable an an hdd controller and you can boot from it.
