Display performance on Windows hosts

I've got a Windows host that I can access by remote desktop and an Ubuntu 14.04 Desktop guest.
The guest display over the remote desktop connection to the host is slow. It's not dire, but it's slow enough to be annoying to use.
It's actually better to remote desktop to the host machine, enable the RDP server on the guest and then remote desktop from the host to the guest - two layers of RDP to access the guest. Why?
To answer the obvious question: Corporate firewall rules mean I can't RDP directly to the guest, at least not without disabling the Windows RDP server on the host.
