Hi there,

I am running the newest virtualbox 5.010 on win7 home x64.
Guest-System ist WinXP Prof 32bit.

I need the guest system to run an old 32bit-only software to communicate with an older Alcatel telephone-system. This worked on XP using the serial-port

on my WIN7-System I have a Sunix PCI- 2-Port Serial Card.

with following ports:
COM3, I/O-Range 0xc000-0xc007, IRQ 20
COM4, I/O-Range 0xc008-0xc00F, IRQ 20

Now I added two serial-ports in my WinXP guest system to a Host-Port like that:
enable serial port
Port1: Checked
Port Number: Custom
IRQ4, 0xC000
Port Mode: Host Device
Windows Host:
Port/File Path: COM3:

enable serial port
Port2: Checked
Port Number: Custom
IRQ3, 0xC008
Port Mode: Host Device
Windows Host:
Port/File Path: COM4:

With these settings I get two serial ports (COM3 and COM4) in my WINXP guest-system without faults.
But when I start the application and choose on of both ports the virtual modem of the Alcatel PC-MMC starts dialing but gets no connection.

I read in another Topic No. 33377 that the connection to a Host device works also with serialports on PCI cards:

But for me it doesn´t work.

what i am doing wrong?

Put the VM serial port settings back to their defaults. The only settings you should have changed was enable the port and configure the host device name.

Read this post here. The post is actually about parallel ports, but the discussion about the role of I/O address and IRQ apply to serial ports too. Only the default values are different.

I tried the default settings for the serial ports, but I don´t get connected to the serial port of my host system.

The two serial ports in the guest system are working without faults.

Do you have any other idea? Maybe the problem is, that the ports on my host are on a PCI-Card?

How did you establish that? Surely if they were working without faults you would not have asked your original question?

Your previously described configuration is nonsensical. If you can't take that information on board then I guess there's no point in pursuing this.

What I wanted to say is, that the serial ports in the WINXP guest system seem to be installed correctly as COM-ports in the device Manager with the default settings as you suggested.

But I dont get connected via the Host (win7 x64) serials ports to the Alcatel PBX which is connected to one of them.

If I start the Alcatel PC MMC-software on the guest system the emulated modem starts dialing but gets no response from the PBX. It gives me a timeout-error.

Do you have any idea what I could try next?

Use an USB serial or a "Serial over Ethernet" (Google it) adapter and install driver/program at the guest.
