I have been running Virtual Box for about 2.5 years under Windows 7 Family Premium (this might be a version of Windows specific to France or Europe, I bought it in France). I run VirtualBox 4.2.14 with Windows7 Family as host and Windows XP as guest. Today, VirtualBox crashed and I cannot open it. The messages I get are familiar error messages on the Internet:
"Failed to create the Virtual Box COM object."
The specific error is:
"Callee RC: REG DB_E_CLASSNOTREG (0x80040154)"
I have tried renaming the *.vbox file (there was a temp version), but there was no corrupted file (this was following a recommendation I had seen of forum moderator mpack, a recommendation I had successfully followed subsequent to a prior crash/corrupted file problem).
I have also tried renaming the .vml file, also following a recommendation by mpack that I saw after searching these forums.
I also tried using System Restore in Windows to see if that would solve the problem.
So I have tried three solutions that have not resolved the problem before posting to this forum.
So, what about just trying to upgrade to the latest version of VirtualBox? Could that solve my problem? If so, I know I am supposed to download GuestAdditions as well as VirtualBox. Should I delete VirtualBox 4.2.. first? Are there associations I will need to make in order for the new VirtualBox to run Windows XP?
Thanks very much in advance for any help.
