Win 10 1511, VB Display driver crashes
Hi,
just a warning and beg for help.
Upgrade the VM from Win10 to 1511 went smooth (from iso image). Today I experienced issues with the display size. It often was shrinked from FULL to a smaller window. Could not get it back to the FULL screen. Re-installing the GA seemed to fix in first place, but short after I got a message that the VB display driver crashed. Perhaps this was the reason for the size issues I have seen earlier.
Trigger: it might be coincidence, I was starting a cmd window in admin mode.

Re: Win 10 1511, VB Display driver crashes
I've been having the exact same issue as you ucrasher, since upgrading to build 1511 the Virtualbox display driver keeps crashing. I'm running the latest version of Virtualbox and Guest Additions (5.0.10r10461). Note that I installed this updated version of Virtualbox AFTER I did the Windows 10 1511 update.
There doesn't seem to be a pattern to the crashes as far as launching applications goes, it mostly seems to happen at logon / reboot for me.
As a workaround I've found that I can go into Device Manager and disable the graphics adapter, then immediately re-enable it and it starts working fine again until the next time I log off or restart the VM, after which it crashes again.
Hopefully there will be an update soon to fix this rather annoying issue.

Same problem here. I can't seem to find a ticket open for this yet.
If this is being addresses let me know. Otherwise I'll open a ticket.

Re: Win 10 1511, VB Display driver crashes
Ditto, same problem here. Windows 10 Pro guest with 1511 update. Same symptoms exactly as described here. Solaris 11.3 host. I have another one on Solaris 11.3 at work that isn't crashing the display driver. I don't have to do anything with the guest but boot it. Sometimes the driver crashes before I log into the guest.
My Windows 10 Pro build 1511 guest with the crashing display driver has 8GB memory, 4x CPU cores (that's the guest, not the host). Host has 32GB memory, 8x CPU cores. I've tried changing several things in case it was an indirect problem--switched to Hyper-V paravirtualization from default, changed chipset from ICH9 to PIIX3, host audio driver changed, swapped between USB 2.0 & 3.0 controller for the guest. None of these changes alone or together helped the situation. I know none is the display driver, but I was trying to find anything that might help.

Re: Win 10 1511, VB Display driver crashes
Same problem here. I installed 1511 as a fresh install from an iso, not an update. Windows 10 Guest: (16GB RAM). Gentoo Linux host. I'll try the disable and then re-enable of the graphics adapter work-around.
Re: Win 10 1511, VB Display driver crashes
Possible fix. My VM just updated the 1511 patch with the latest update to the update.... MS re-released the build due to a few "minor" problems. After the update installed, I reinstalled (for about the 10th time) the additions. For the first time since update 1511 it seems stable. In fact, I'm posting this from the VM just as a test. Even the 1511 ISO images have been re-released if you had downloaded them. Without reinstalling additions the driver still crashed; prior to this Windows update, reinstalling VB additions had not fixed the problem.
If you run "winver" on Windows 10, the latest update displays "OS Build 10586.17". The first update that had all the issues with VB display drivers ended with ".14" in the build number.
Not 100% sure it's fixed, but it's been stable far longer than ever since this thread began. Always the display driver crashes within a couple minutes. My VM has been up for a whole (almost) hour!
I may be jumping the gun, but this is promising.

Re: Win 10 1511, VB Display driver crashes
Todays update for Win10 did switch to OS Build 10586.17. No need to get the .iso again.
Reinstalling GA right now. Lets hope.

Now over 12 hours without a crash. Looking good.

Re: Win 10 1511, VB Display driver crashes
After the update winver shows I am running OS Build 10586.17
The display driver provided by VirtualBox guest additions V. 5.0.10 still crashes. (Although it takes longer before this happens.) I wonder if my dual-monitor setup has something to do with this?

With the latest Testbuild of Vbox and Windows 10 Pro x64 as Host and Guest the driver crashed. Here is the log.

[/size]Re: Win 10 1511, VB Display driver crashes
My display driver was crashing as soon as I entered the PIN to log into my Windows 10 guest. Every single time, and then about every 5-10 minutes thereafter.
I think I've fixed it (or at least is isn't crashing right on login so far, although it crashed once after clicking on the start menu icon) by doing the following:
1. Uninstall Guest Additions from the guest.
2. Make sure all windows updates have been installed on both the guest and host. As of 12/9/15 Winver reports that both are at Windows version 10586.29.
3. Uninstall Virtualbox
4. Reinstall the current Virtualbox test build. As of 12/9/15 this is Build 104602, Extension Pack 104602, and Guest Additions 104561.
5. While I did have one crash immediately after configuring my displays (I have three displays enabled in the guest, and you have to re-extend the desktop to them after reinstalling guest additions), it has remained stable since then. Just being stable long enough to write this post is a new record. I have another VM with the same problem I'm going to work on now.
By the way, I haven't seen in other posts, but in Windows 10 you can get to the Device Manager by right-clicking on the start menu. You can then disable and reenable the driver with a couple of clicks and get your displays back until the next crash.

Never mind any of the above in my prior post. It just crashed again. Back to the drawing board.
Re: Win 10 1511, VB Display driver crashes
Hi,
I have the same issue. For me it looks like the "VirtualBox Graphic Adapter" crashes when I am "waking up" the instance after a "idle time". e.g. After unlocking the Lock screen.

Re: Win 10 1511, VB Display driver crashes
FWIW, it would be very helpful if users would attach their vbox.logs. Just saying it crashes is not very informative.
With the VM fully shut down, right click its icon in the VirtualBox Manager, select "Show Log" and save "VBox.log" to a zip file. Attach the zip here.
