Host OS is getting TCP/IP settings from guest server

Post by Cookies »

I'm running Windows 7 Pro as my host OS and I have Windows Server 2012 R2 running from Virtualbox as guest.
I'm using Bridged-adapter to share internet connection to my server.
On my server I have setup a domain network and I have DHCP running and giving out TCP/IP addresses to the computers connected to the domain network.

Everything is working as it should. One day I had this kooky idea to connect my host OS as part of my guest servers domain network, which I did.
I also have the guest server giving out TCP/IP addresses to my host OS through DHCP.
I'm still using local user profile with my host OS, but everything is still going great.

I'd like to know if this is a really bad idea or just standard practice?
I can't shake this feeling that one day my setup will mean trouble.
How is this even working?

It is a bad idea, unfortunately, and not standard practice. When a client PC boots up, it looks to the domain controller to get logon credentials, both for its own authentication and anyone who may desire to log on. If it can't find the domain controller, it can't let anyone log on or get access to other domain-controller-protected network resources. Now if the domain controller isn't running because it is a guest on the client PC, and the client PC can't log in because the domain controller isn't running yet, the user won't be able to log on to can start the domain controller so the user can log on.

Kind of like one of those "go back in time and accidentally kill your grandfather" sort of things. It will lead to a rip in the space-time continuum and eventually destroy the universe.

Well, maybe not that serious. But you may one day get stuck seriously, unable to boot the host because the guest isn't running yet. You really need to take the host off the domain.

Our office domain controller guest runs on a non-domain host just fine.

Yeah, I had a feeling that this was something I'd better not mess with.
I'll remove my host OS from the domain network while I can.

Thanks for explaining it to me.
