Windows 10 Guest captures USB 3 devices at start up but they do not appear in the Guest file explorer. At shut down of the Guest, each device opens in the Host when released from the Guest.
Set up as follows:
Windows 10 Host
Windows 10 Guest
VBox 5.0.10 Extension Pack installed
VBox 5.0.10 Guest additions installed in Guest
USB 3 Extensible Host Controller driver installed in Guest
USB 3 xhci enabled in VBox (correction xchi replaces echi)
Filters set for each device.
For most of this week I have been trying to get USB 3 to work in the guest in similar fashion to USB 2 without success in 5.0.08 or 5.0.10, any suggestions would be welcome.

That makes no sense. EHCI isn't USB3.samtweet wrote:USB 3 ehci enabled in VBox
But if you want suggestions, you could do worse than providing the VBox.log from your VM.

Re: Win 10 Guest USB 3 not showing in File Explorer
My mistake it should read USB 3 XCHI
I have attached the log file, due to forum file size limitations I have split the file into parts 1 and 2

You captured a HP Photosmart 8100 device. I don't know exactly what's supposed to show up where. You can check the guest's Device Manager.

IMHO you started down the wrong road anyway. A host printer should be shared on a (virtual) network, not dedicated to one VM by grabbing the USB port. You have same OS as host and guest, so I can't think of any possible advantage to the guest owning the printer.

Thank you for the replies
I have attached some snips showing more of the setup.
Ok I will delete the printer and share it instead

Re: Win 10 Guest USB 3 not showing in File Explorer
Just remember to delete the printer from your list of filters. You don't want to share the printer and still have it be grabbed. And I assume none of your remaining filters are broad enough to include the printer.
p.s. I see an Epson scanner in the list too, which for the same reason probably shouldn't be there. Basically, nothing which is permanently attached to your host should ever be owned by the guest, unless there's some reason the host can't use it. For that matter even removable drives could be accessed as shared folders.

Re: Win 10 Guest USB 3 not showing in File Explorer
I can't quite follow what's what. However, I highly recommend using the View/"Devices by connection" selection in the Device Manager. That makes it more obvious which device does what and which is or isn't working.
And I'd add that for most USB devices it is not necessary to use filters. Capturing the device on the fly should work.

Re: Win 10 Guest USB 3 not showing in File Explorer - Update
Since my last post I have checked how USB 3 devices are handled by my system.
My Mother board is a Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 with an AMD Eight core processor, USB3 is controlled by an Etron device with it's own Etron drivers.
The Windows Host Device Manager lists USB3 as "Etron USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller - 1.0 (Microsoft)"
The Windows Guest Device Manager lists USB3 as "Intel(R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller - 1.0 (Microsoft)"
None of my VBox guest OS's whether Windows or Linux, will recognise USB3 or USB2 devices in a USB3 port.
My Windows 10 host and Linux OS's all recognise USB3 and USB2 devices in any USB port when running outside of VirtualBox.
I have downloaded the Etron drivers for my system but they will not install in the Windows 10 guest.
As far as I can see VirtualBox does not recognise the Etron USB3 contoller on my motherboard, this looks as if I am stuck with USB2 in VirtualBox, unless, there is a way of enabling VirtualBox to recognise the Etron controller.
