Cannot stretch guest VM onto host's second monitor

I have two host monitors. I can stretch/resize the guest VM window onto the second monitor (if I choose the "Auto-resize Guest Display") so that the guest window is now the size of both monitors. The problem is the guest VM inside the window will not stretch to fill the space and it remains the size of only a single monitor. This used to work several versions ago. One day I upgraded the Vbox and it stopped working. I have installed the Guest Additions. I'm running 5.0.8.
If I don't select the "Auto-resize Guest Display" option, the guest window will not resize to the second monitor. What happens is that as soon as you start to stretch the window onto the second monitor, it snaps back to the first. The only way I can get the window to resize to the second monitor is by choosing this option.
In summary, I can resize the guest window onto the second monitor. The problem is that the guest VM inside the window will not stretch to the size of the window and remains the size of only one monitor.
