Unable to Ping VM from Host ( Windows )

Hi


I have installed Linux 5 on Virtual box. I have selected " Bridged Adapter " Network type for the VM. I created this VM while i was at work and once upon creation, i tried pinging this VM from my Host machine ( Windows ). Its was successful.

But, later on when i moved to another site office, i tried opening this VM, tried to ping it from the Host machine again. But this time its not working. It was not able to ping the VM. it shows connection timeout.


But when next day, i tried to ping this VM from while i was connected to my office network, it worked again. When i again to move to another environment, the ping requested time out.


Can someone advise me on this. Help on this is much appreciated. Thanks.

Typically with a roaming PC you setup two virtual adapters. One set to NAT to allow the Internet and one set to host-only so the host and guest can communicate while off LAN. You can substitute Bridged for NAT if you need. See the networking section of the users manual.

I tried substituting Bridged with NAT. But no result. Still Host and Guest could not communicate. Host cant ping guest. Any suggestions ?

Did you try the first half of Perry's suggestion, to have two virtual NICs enabled in the guest, the other NIC set to host-only? You should always be able to ping between host and guest through the host-only interface. And NAT on the other interface should always allow the guest to get to the internet. NAT by itself will not allow pinging from the host, NAT just drills a private tunnel through the host to get to the web, basically.

Is the host connected to the internet via a wi-fi interface? Bridged sometimes doesn't work with wi-fi, due to limited wi-fi host drivers or limitations in the network router or access point. No way for Virtualbox to be able to fix those things unfortunately. You could try looking for updated wi-fi drivers for your host.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will retry once again with two Virtual NIC enabled. NAT and Host-Only.


Yes the host is connected to internet via Wifi Interface. The internet being accessed at "Work Place" and "Home" is provided by different Internet Service Providers.

Previously couple of months back, the "Work Place" and "Home" internet both were using the same ISP. Those days this issues were not there. I did not faced any issue.
But once at the work place, the moment ISP is changed to another service provider, im facing this issue with VirtualBox and VMware workstation as well.
