Win7 guest running on Ubuntu with i7-5500 CPU

Post by pavloos »

Hi,

On a daily basis I use Ubuntu but from time to time I need to use a piece of software that is dedicated to Windows. As I do not want to switch to Windows then from time to time I experience some problems. So I decided to change my laptop, to keep Ubuntu as an OS but to create a virtual machine with Win7.

I have narrowed down the scope of laptops and I am leaning towards ones with i7-5500U CPU. Have any of you had an experience with Win7 guest running on Ubuntu host with i7-5500U CPU? I am not going to play demanding 3D games. Rather stuff like Adobe Captivate, Photoshop. Will this CPU handle virtualization? Or should I look for something else, like for example laptops dedicated to gaming? Other parameters would be:
  • at leats 240GB SSD
    at least 8GB RAM
and a dedicated GFX (supposingly GeForce 920M)
Thank you for the feedback.

Regards,
Pawel

Your spec seems ok to me, though a laptop is rarely going to be an excellent platform for VM. 250GB might be enough to comfortably host one VM, plus the host. I would also have preferred a true quad core (threads are almost irrelevant to VM).
