Thunderbird profile in shared directory problem

My Thunderbird profile points to '/media/sf_shared/Thunderbird/'.
Note that '/media/sf_shared/' is my shared directory.

If I DON'T create a 2nd profile, I do have some troubles, but they are relatively minor.

If I create a 2nd profile located here: '~/.thunderbird/new_TBird', all in 'new_TBird' is happiness.

But if I create a 2nd profile located here: '/media/sf_shared/new_TBird', when I attempt to run TBird with that profile, it comes up crashed. I have to kill the process.

Anyone notice this? Is there a fix?
(I suspect that the minor problems I'm having are related.)
