Can I allow window update to upgrade from 7 to 10? Ver 5.0.6
Hello, What can I expect if I allow window update to upgrade my host from 7 to 10?
Is VirtualBox Version 5.0.6.r103037 ready for this windows update?
VirtualBox Guest Additions 5.0.6.r103037
Host:
Windows 7 Professional 64 bit
Dell XPS 8700 Processor, Intel i7-4770
2TB 7200 rpm hard drive + 35GB mSATA solid state drive
16GB Dual Channel DDRS 1600MGz (4GBx4)
How to links appreciated.
PS Can I allow window update to upgrade my guest from 7 to 10?

Are you looking for absolution?
Would it really make a difference if I said it would work with no trouble at all?
It seems to me that it would be safest to assume the worst, and plan accordingly. At the least that means backing up all VMs and the .VirtualBox folder. If it was me I'd do a whole disk backup (e.g. Acronis) of the Win7 system too. I would not activate Win10 until I was sure I didn't need to go back.

Good advice mpack. Absolution? No. I searched for this issue and did not find out if anyone is doing it (With the latest VB version) and if so what are the success stories and issues. I have seen some using linux and Apple OS. I do not want to be the first one to try window update to upgrade my host from 7 to 10.
Clarifying for: loukingjr who misunderstood my question. Thank you for the other who have commented though!
Does anyone have links I could read on users that have successfully allowed windows update to update their host from 7 to 10 and there existing guest VirtualBox machines worked (Since VB 5.0.6)

Matt, upgrading a host has absolutely nothing to do with VirtualBox whether it's an OSX. Windows or Linux host. Millions of people have upgraded to Windows 10. I am sure you could find hundreds of thousands of links if you bothered looking.

Re: Can I allow window update to upgrade from 7 to 10? Ver 5
I was brave and upgraded my host from Windows 7 to Windows 10 without thinking about VirtualBox. In the manner in which I use my VMs all versions from the test build that fixed the bridged networking issues have worked for me whereas others who use it differently still have problems.
Bite the bullet... upgrade Windows, upgrade VirtualBox to 5.0.8 and if you have problems ask questions here or raise bugs in the bugtracker.

My crystal ball is currently broken. If you want assistance you are going to have to give me all of the necessary information.
Please don't ask me to do your homework for you, I have more than enough of my own things to do.

I've just upgraded my laptop to windows 10, and Virtualbox linux guests are very laggy and slow. I wouldn't recommend it..
This is even with 4gb ram, 2/4 processors set aside.

FWIW, My Linux guests are fine even on a fairly under powered Intel M CPU so I suspect something else is wrong. What version of VirtualBox do you have installed?finleyb wrote:I've just upgraded my laptop to windows 10, and Virtualbox linux guests are very laggy and slow. I wouldn't recommend it..

Most likely the usual Windows Update stuff that follows a new Windows install or significant upgrade. A glance at the tasklist should answer such questions.loukingjr wrote:FWIW, My Linux guests are fine even on a fairly under powered Intel M CPU so I suspect something else is wrong.

um, not sure why I was quoted. But I've been confused most of the day.

I'm using the latest version; 5.0.8 I think it is, is that the one you're using? At first it wouldn't let me create x64 guests, but for reasons unknown I can now.. I can't work out why it's so slow to use. I've tried various different distros and they are all the same.loukingjr wrote:FWIW, My Linux guests are fine even on a fairly under powered Intel M CPU so I suspect something else is wrong. Because I was continuing a point which you started. Try adding my sentence immediately following yours, as quoted.loukingjr wrote:um, not sure why I was quoted.

Pick one of your slow guests. With the VM fully shut down, right click it in the VB GUI. Select "Show Log" and save "VBox.log" to a zip file. Attach the zip here.finleyb wrote:I'm using the latest version; 5.0.8 I think it is, is that the one you're using? At first it wouldn't let me create x64 guests, but for reasons unknown I can now.. When I simply move the mouse around or drag an icon across the desktop, Virtualbox managers CPU use jumps right up to 50 or 60%
I don't think it's Virtualbox' fault, reckon it's W10.
Here's the log from my Centos VM, I haven't done anything with it yet.

I could have sworn I said "Attach the log here" and not post a link to the log.
The first thing to try is reduce the amount of RAM for the guest to 2GB.
Also, install the guest additions.
