USB That Requires Driver Install Not Working

Hi there,
I'm running VirtualBox 4.3.32 on a Mac OS X 10.10 Host with a Windows 8.1 Guest. I have a device that I'm trying to connect to the guest, as it's windows-only compatible. The device has a USB-to-custom port which connects to some commercial hardware, and the port needs to install driver software the first time it's connected to a computer. When I plug it into a Windows PC it instantly tries to install the software, and a prompt comes up asking permission. From there it's smooth sailing. When I plug the device into my mac, unsurprisingly nothing happens and the device doesn't even register on the host OS. My problem is that I can't get it to work on my guest Windows 8.1 PC. I've installed the virtualbox extension pack to allow USB / USB2.0 capture, and I tried making a blank USB filter to capture anything plugged into the host USB ports, but so far I've had no luck.
I'm fairly new to virtualbox, but I searched the forums and couldn't find any previous threads with Mac hosts, usb's that install drivers, etc. Any help would be very much appreciated!
