Hmmm

I've tried restarting host as well as guest.

Re-installed guest additions.

No luck, view->Virtual Screen 1 resolution list still all greyed out.

??

Did the guest additions installer actually run?

Yes: it made me "agree" to conditions.

Then after that it was SUPER QUICK.

Immediately at the "finished" screen.

Should it have taken some time?

However it did say "already installed " when I ran it again...

yes, it should have taken a couple minutes at least. Then ask you to reboot the guest.

OK well it didn't do that.

I've got the latest build of VB.

And the guest additions were a 16.9MB file Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-5.0.8-103449-2.vbox-extpack

That's what I thought. The extension pack is NOT the guest additions. That's why it's not called Guest Additions and is called an Extension Pack.

With your guest open, select Insert Guest Additions CD Image from the Devices menu. Then do what it says.

You were right.

I am an idiot!

Have now found the resolution (1366 * 768) that works best.

(There were lots of resolutions that didn't work at all when selected?)

And indeed in Full Screen it works perfectly.

Very happy now and will be able to do great things !

btw. any recommendations on settings such as Numbers of Processors to get the most out of Macbook Pro VB Windows 10 setup?

I never said you were an idiot. nope. nope.

as far as the number of processors, depends on your MBP. If it has 2 cores and 4 threads, use one, if it has 4 cores and 8 threads, use two.

btw. I have scientifically determined (I tried both)

that whereas graphics performance in general in now MUCH BETTER with Guest Additions installed:

- if you turn on "3D acceleration" in Settings /Display / Screen then it gets a LOT WORSE

- and then if you add in "2D video acceleration" (in the same panel & I don't know why I need it, but I tried) then it's a total DISASTER

What's that all about?

I thought turning work over to the GPU was going to make programs run better?
