No selection for unbutu 64 bit
No selection for unbutu 64 bit
Hello,
I am very new to VirtualBox. I have Windows 7 64b i7 quad core / VirtualBox 5.0.6. I am trying to create a 64b ubuntu client. I select New then I select Tyrpe > linux but under Version I only have 32 bit selections. I don't know why 64 bit is not a selection? Is there anything I can do to get a 64 bit selection?
Regards, Martin

Thanks for the quick reply. I saw that post and check those 4 items and I even saw the post to be thorough. So I went back to check them thoroughly and I still do not have have of the impediments those 4 points bring up. I have McAfee and since it's a company machine I do not have the capability to disable any aspect of it. I did not however see anything in past posts that mention McAfee so I do not know how much of a concern that might be. It may be just one of those things I simply have to accept

If you are limited in what you can do with the machine it may be impossible to do anything about it. VMX ( VT-x/AMD-v ) settings in the bios must be enabled and some companies just don't allow it.
Other than that Hyper-v is the leading culprit and if you can not gain access to disable it then that will stop you as well. Not sure about McAfee I have not used virus software in years.

Re: No selection for unbutu 64 bit
Thanks Perryg for the advice. It's looking like a limitation of my access in to McAfee really. It was worth a try though. I don't mind working with the 32bit version. In the end for what I am doing, it's all the same. Have a super day!

Re: No selection for unbutu 64 bit
I am not entirely sure how to interpret that suggestion, but if it was: choose a 32bit template then install a 64bit OS then that will not work. VirtualBox requires VT-x (or AMD-v) for all 64bit guests, as the FAQ said.
If you followed that suggestion then it may indeed appear to work, but if it does then the only possible reason is that your guest OS installer was a 32bit/64bit hybrid and the 32bit version was installed. VIRTUALBOX REQUIRES VT-X IN ORDER TO RUN 64BIT CODE IN THE VM. VirtualBox increasingly requires VT-x/AMD-v in other scenarios too, e.g. the latest versions of Windows even if 32bit.

What I mean is that person could have the type to lets say Ubuntu 32 Bit but enable everything the 64 bit system needs

Re: No selection for unbutu 64 bit
That will not work because VT-x/AMD-v is mandatory to be able to run 64-bit guests. There simply is no way around it and if it is not available using the 64-bit template than changing to 32-bit will have no effect.MichaelTech wrote:What I mean is that person could have the type to lets say Ubuntu 32 Bit but enable everything the 64 bit system needs

Re: No selection for unbutu 64 bit
That only will work *IF* you have VMX and it is enabled. You can not get around the need of VMX if you want to run 64-bit OSes.
