Guest Additions 5.0.8 do not install in Windows 10
Guest Additions 5.0.8 do not install in Windows 10
Hi,
I have Windows 10 guest running on OS X 10.11.1 host.
I installed the newest VirtualBox (5.0.8) but Guest Additions refuse to install. First time I tried to install them VM crashed; after reboot it doesn't crash anymore but neither do Guest Additions install.
I used the uninstaller to remove what was apparently the previous Guest Additions (5.0.4 or 5.0.6, don't remember), but that doesn't fix the issue. The problem has something to do with graphics driver, please see the screen shot.
Any ideas?
Regards,
N.N.
EDIT:
I'm pretty sure I didn't have any problems with 5.0.4 on OS X 10.11.0. The problem might be therefore with 5.0.8 or 10.11.1 updates; too bad I can't find out which because I happened to install both of them simultaneously. Are there any common troubleshooting steps, which one could follow in a situation like this? I tried removing Guest Additions folder and reinstalling Guest Additions but the installer stalls regardless. I also reinstalled VirtualBox even though I don't know if one could expect it to solve anything, and it didn't.

Re: Guest Additions 5.0.8 do not install in Windows 10
Which version of Windows 10 is this? Is it the final release version?

FWIW, the 5.0.8 guest additions install in the current insider preview build of Windows 10.

I am running into the same issue.
On El Capitan 10.11.1 and Virtualbox 5.0.8, update to Guest Additions in Microsoft Windows 10, final release, fails with dump. Reinstall fails on graphics driver.

Re: Guest Additions 5.0.8 do not install in Windows 10
Since I was running the newer insider preview I installed the release version of Windows 10 on OSX 10.11.1 and VB 5.0.8. I had no problems updating the guest additions. I think we need some vbox.logs posted from NiceNick and Robr57.

Please specify which logs are useful and where to find them.loukingjr wrote:Since I was running the newer insider preview I installed the release version of Windows 10 on OSX 10.11.1 and VB 5.0.8. Brief googling with vbox.log indicates that I should find such logs in
On Mac OS X, this is $HOME/Library/VirtualBox/Machines/<vm name>/Logs
On Unix-like systems (Linux, Solaris), this is $HOME/.VirtualBox/Machines/<vm name>/Logs
However I don't have Machines/ directory in my $HOME/Library/VirtualBox/ and I also don't have a hidden folder named VirtualBox in my home directory. In $HOME/Library/VirtualBox/ there are files named VBoxSVC.log but I don't know if these help further.

With the VM fully shut down, right click it in the VB GUI. Select "Show Log" and save "VBox.log" (ONLY) to a zip file. Attach the zip here.

Re: Guest Additions 5.0.8 do not install in Windows 10
@Nice Nick and Robr57…
I looked at the logs and I can't tell what the issues are. It seems to be a local problem with the Windows 10 guest but I don't know what. I can say it's not a OSX 10.11.1 or VirtualBox 5.0.8 problem. You could try and roll back to the 5.0.6 guest additions and see if that helps.

Re: Guest Additions 5.0.8 do not install in Windows 10
I could not just revert to 5.0.6 Guest Additions, for some strange reason, mounting the CD image remained 5.0.8..... When I checked the VB Preferences, it showed 5.0.6 as extension, but the install continued to be 5.0.8....
So, I downgraded VB to 5.0.6 and voila, I could install the Guest Additions again.
What I noticed is that when I tried to install 5.0.8, for some reason the file VBoxVideoW8.inf in the Systemfolder C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\vboxvideow8.inf_amd64_0fdc0e68ee25ecc1 gets corrupt during the installation..... It became empty.
This is causing the 5.0.8 Guest Additions to fail.

Re: Guest Additions 5.0.8 do not install in Windows 10
Sounds like the same issue the OP has. Unfortunately i don't have the same problem with the release version or the current Insider Preview and have no insight into what may be causing the issue. It almost has to be something that is running in the Windows 10 guest that I'm not running.

Re: Guest Additions 5.0.8 do not install in Windows 10
As the OP is running a Volume Licensed Windows 10 Education version which, along with the similarly licensed Windows 10 Enterprise, has several features and functions, including enhanced system security features such as Device Guard, not present in Windows Home/Pro, perhaps one of those features could be interfering with the Guest Additions installation.
Might be useful if the OP posted a query on either Microsoft's Technet Forum or Developer's Forum to see if that is a possible explanation.

sounds like a reasonable explanation to me.
