Host freezes on mounting USB

I am running VB 5.0.2 with the USB add on program on a WIN 10 host (AMD cpu, Gigabyte mb). I run a WIN XP guest with bridge networking. It works.

But, when I try to mount a USB device (2.0 - EHCI) the entire computer freezes. It won't event respond to ctl-alt-del. My only recourse is the power switch. I have played with several settings to no avail.

I have reinstalled VB once since this began, and reinstalled XP as well. No effect. I have checked all the BIOS settings that may have an effect. Any suggestions where I should look next?
