Need more video memory...

Post by Celltech »

I built a workstation for my brother. The host OS is Win 7 x64 and both guests are the same.

The issue is he has 3 x 4K monitors. I have the VB video memory set to the max 256MB and VB is claiming it needs 294MB minimum.

Is there any hack to give VB any more video RAM?

So in doing some more research after posting this it would seem that 256MB is easily enough to run three 4K monitors. I am going to have him try and disable both 2D and 3D acceleration to see if that lowers the memory usage.

I was also wondering about cutting back the color depth. I see that setvideomodehint can be used to set it once the VM is up, but at that point it's too late.

Is there any way to force 16 or 26 bit resolution upon the VM starting up?

Don't mess with the color depth. In practice the only usable option is for it to use the same color depth as the host, unless you really wanted to see what crap performance looks like.
