USB doesn't work on VB 5.0

Post by Shuiwu »

Hey guys, I'm using OS X El Capitan and Virtualbox has been updated to 5.0.6 (Extension pack and guest additions too).
Now the problem is I can see my USB stick name is listed on the 'Devices' menu, but it doesn't show anything on the 'Computer' on win 7.
Anyone pls help me? I also attached screenshots.

The USB stick won't show in Windows unless it is formatted with a file system Windows understands. It will show up in Windows' disk management if you want to format it from there.

but its not just USB stick. I mean neither my mobile hard-disk drive or phone could show up. Do I have to formate all of them to work in Windows?

You didn't mention that before.

1. If your mobile hard drive is formatted as a hfs+ drive, yes. Windows can't read hfs+ volumes.
2. I don't have a smartphone to test but you don't format smartphones.

FWIW, I borrowed my g/f''s iPhone and it worked for me in Windows 7 once the drivers were installed and I told the iPhone to trust the guest.

thx for the tips. however, my usb stick and mobile hard drive both worked in the previous win7 on Virtualbox. also they work on other laptops installed with win7.
so i don't think its about format? sorry I'm really bad at tech stuff.

Attach the vbox.log for the guest.

With the VM fully shut down, right click it in the VB GUI. Select "Show Log" and save "VBox.log" (ONLY) to a zip file. Attach the zip here.

Apparently there are two different USB 3.0 controllers for Windows 7. I don't know if that's the problem or not but they aren't interchangeable.

I can't say why there are two driver sets (it makes little sense to me), but Intel's installer should refuse to install the wrong one. The '7 Series' driver is the right one.

I don't know. The site mentions they are for two different chipsets. Beats me. I'm a Mac person.

They are. The 7-Series driver is for the original 'Panther Point' chipset which was Intel's first xHCI implementation. That's what VirtualBox emulates because that chip has the widest driver support. The 8/9/100-series drivers covers all later Intel chipsets. The drivers are extremely similar, and there's no functional difference that I know of. It's just that one driver supports the original xHCI chip and the other driver does all the rest. For whatever reason, this is somehow better for Intel than having a single driver covering everything.
