Nat problem with linux guest

Hi All,

I'm having problems with virtualbox 5 on getting nat to work.
First of I start a clean installation.
(First de-installed, removed vbox files from system32\drivers and from hklm\system\currentcontrolset\services and removed .virtualbox folder from userprofile)

Created a new vm.
Added a ubuntu live dvd to the image, and booted the live dvd

So on my host I have normal internet connectivity without any proxies what so ever.
So when I try to reach the internet from my host it can't reach it.:

ping nu.nl
ping: unknown host nu.nl
telnet nu.nl 80
telnet: could not resolve nu.nl/80: Temporary failure in name resolution
telnet: 62.69.166.254 --> trying to bypass dns
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Network is unreachable.

ifconfig --> gives 10.0.2.15 as ip-address

So in short my nat does get an ip from the vbox dhcp.
However I can't reach the internet.
Could you guys help me out why.

Looks to me like it is getting the right IP address. What makes you think it is not and what do you think it should be?

It is the right ip-address.
Problem is, the guest does not have network access.
So the nat dhcp works, however the network connection does not.

I would try to find out why. The guest is getting the proper IP so DHCP is working. Next can you ping the host side ( gateway ) and the DNS server?

10.0.2.2 and 10.0.2.3 respectively?

Note about Windows hosts: icmp is disabled by default on Windows and ping does not work. You will need to enable ping to accurately test the connections.

10.0.2.2 and 10.0.2.3 give a ping response.
However when trying to ping outside of the nat network it stops.
(or connect for that matter )

Then I would investigate the host for issues. IE. firewall or virus software that might be stopping it. Since I don't do windows I can't help with that but maybe someone that does can take over.

In addition when I put the network mode into bridged.
It works right away (at least when I am at home, since my work location doesn't allow this )
