Exit from Split View — how to?

Post by Endorphinity »

Just tried to use the latest VB (5.0.6) on the El Capitan release (15A284), and at some point, when it was in Split View along with Mail.app, I've noticed, that I cannot now switch off the Split View. Of the two window titlebar buttons visible for my VM, only Close Window button is active, while another button, which should, presumably, switch window state to normal view, is disabled. If I am completing Split View for the second application (Mail, in this case), then VirtualBox VM window takes all the screen space and cannot be switched back to windowed mode, as expected. I suppose, this is a bug. Please, advise.

Not all applications are split view enabled.

I have no doubts this is true as a general statement, but what about VirtualBox, in particular? ;)
If it was tested properly, then incompatibility with Split View should have been reflected in the Release Notes/Changelog, but I didn't see it there. May it happen I missed something?

Of all the hundreds and possibly thousands or even tens of thousands of apps that are not split view compatible, I doubt they all mention it somewhere. It makes no sense for some kinds of apps to be compatible at any rate such as games. I would think it is up to the developers to decide if they want their app to be compatible. IMO

Aren't we discussing VirtualBox here? I don't care about hundreds of apps out there. My point is that incompatibility (or partial compatibility) with one of the advertised new features of OS X major release should be properly documented and made publicly available to users at the moment VirtualBox is released to general public. As simple as that.

Well I'm sure when OSX 10.11 is listed as a supported VirtualBox host more info will be given.

Well, such a justification might have sounded reasonable for some one-man-show startup release notes, but this software product is developed by Oracle. Moreover, El Capitan has been in public beta stage since early summer, and I can't believe VB hasn't been tested on then-available builds.
Anyway, let's see if there would be any Oracle developers' response.

Yes, and in the mean time, perhaps Apple will release 10.11.1 which fixes many of the problems with 10.11. One can hope.

It's a matter of priorities and I'm willing to bet that paying customers do not have split-view high in their priorities...

That would be a rare occurrence. Usually only simple users like you and me and the rest of the volunteers are the ones lurking around these forums.
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.

If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

Personally I would be very surprised if VirtualBox was made to be Split View compatible. I for one wouldn't use it for Virtual Machines, in VB or any other hypervisor. None the less, you can run non-Split View apps including VirtualBox guests in split view. Just not a smoothly as intended.
