El Capitan Installer Won't See Virtual Disk

Hi everyone,
I bet this is something simple, but no amount of searching has shown me the answer. This morning, I didn't know what Virtual Box was. However, I've played around with similar stuff previously.
I'm trying to install El Capitan on our Mac Mini that's running Yosemite so I can test running Server on a virtualized machine while running FileMaker Server on the "real" machine. When the OS X Installer gets to the "select hard drive", the only thing visible is the USB drive that holds the .ISO file. The Virtual Drive is not to be found. I selected the default setting of VDI for the hard drive format.
Any idea what I'm missing?
I've seen some references to Disk Utility, but the VDI doesn't show up there, either. (Not sure that it should, but...)
Thanks!
EDIT: I found the Drive Utility in the OS X Installer and formatted the drive. It's installing now.
