Why are some Microsoft biased moderators allowed to sabotage the work of open community on VirtualBox forums. If the thread "Is upgrading Windows 7 and 8 to w10 on VirtualBox at all possible or even legal?" is not in the right forum (which, BTW it is), it should be moved and not locked, because of someone's respected, but nevertheless incorrect opinion. The fact is that upgrades of Windows 7 and 8 are not possible, is hidden behind plethora of inadequate explanations, found everywhere, and make no mistake, also here on VirualBox forums. It is as if that those that seem to be helping, are doing the opposite. For instance the following post i consider a sabotage:

Why is it that nobody knows or does not allow discussions about Windows 10 upgrades to evolve, so a reliable and concise instructions could be written? "Windows Guests" forum is not the right place, the right forum is where "Is upgrading Windows 7 and 8 to w10 on VirtualBox at all possible or even legal?" is locked, unless "volenteers" from either Microsoft / Oracle are conveying to us that cooperation in this area is not in the interest of M$.

Because:

1. You didn't do your homework.
2. You were pointed to the homework solution.
3. You are selfish and you treat other users that are trying to help you like garbage. You do not want to spend time figuring out or searching for the solution, but you expect other volunteers to provide you with the list of posts that point you to the solution. Seriously? For real?

I read saw, studied and followed the link, used iso image and and it did not work. The trouble with such posts as this one, telling us about the "iso" is, that nobody clears up (1) »which iso at which time«, (2) how to get them, and (3) how to run them. There's iso for "Get Windows 10" update app, there's iso for the Windows update, there's iso one creates from an OEM installed OS, and there's ISO 9990,... I've tried them all, nothing worked!

Worst of all, there's no-one telling us, yes I did it and it works. If there is please come forward, and tell us that it works, for all I know, it really does not, or perhaps does it?

Homework? After all I told you this is bordering to an insult!

To be honest Perry I tried to be civil and explain to the user what to do before mpack locked his original post. I thought I was overly civil actually. But this is my last post for this particular user.

As a moderator it is my duty to mention when things seem to be getting out of hand and mention that it needs to stop. If you feel you are one that my statement fits then yes, stop it. Conduct yourself in a courteous manor and continue. I would help you but I simply refuse to do Windows as all I see is a waste of time. IMHO

Perryg, thank you 4uho, which I'm inclined to share with you, when it comes to Windows 10 upgrades on VB, but would appreciate had anybody elaborated on the WHY? I hate, to think, that your response may not be about the issue of "Upgrading to w10", but rather about the conduct of the "victims" here.

In fact I do not care for the elaborate, I just wish to clarify mho, namely that upgrading to w10 on VB is a waste of time, and not my asking a question.

So could someone confirm my suspicions, that for the time being, rather than upgrade, we should only install a new w10, for ~$100 on VirualBox. Though, IMHO, this is not how things should be!

Here is the Microsoft link for obtaining the Win 10 Upgrade ISOs.
Once the page is displayed, click the "show all" link to display the details.
Read the details carefully, they may vary depending on Windows 10 flavor desired.
These instructions are not VirtualBox specific. Many folks have had trouble
using the "Upgrade Windows 10" code that Microsoft downloaded to their
Win7 and Win 8 machines. That's one reason Microsoft created those Upgrade ISOs.
Once you have downloaded the desired ISO, then follow the steps outlined in BillG's
original thread, linked above, to do the upgrade.
Note that BillG states in that thread that he successfully upgraded his Win 7
to Win 10 using the ISO and the steps outlined in his post of Aug 2.

I'had used "Installing Windows 10 using the media creation tool" to download the Windows 10 iso file (Win10_English_x64.iso) weeks before it ever came up here. The trouble is my Windows 8.1 (or, 4 that matter Windows 7) product key. It simply will not work with Windows 10 on VirtualBox (it works on irons), when it (the product key) belongs to the upgrading OS, or is this fluke now fixed?. It looks, indeed, that you have not tested this out. Besides, Microsoft instructions on the pages you posted above are either for mouse pushing computer illiterates or for M$ pundits, who know how »Windows 10«, »Windows 10 KN«, »Windows 10 N«, and »Windows 10 Single language«, in the Select edition drop-down list, map to Windows 7, Windows 8 or 8.1, Home, Professional and who knows what else (you do the permutations).

I'll check all my upgrade procedures again, now that I am a bit more sure, that it should work, and try to figure these things out at one point. If I get it working, I will inform you all. Thank you for indirect thumbs up, smithlar.

Yes, you're a Microsoft biased (err..) Apple Mac user...

Whether a Win 7 or 8 OS will upgrade or not rarely has anything to do with it being a vm. There have been multiple discussions in both Windows answers and the Technet forums on possible causes and fixes for failed upgrades.

I have upgraded several physical systems and multiple vms, and the only one that completely refused to do anything was an on the metal Windows 7 on a Dell Inspiron (which unfortunately is the machine my wife usually uses). I has to do a clean install of Windows 7 before it would upgrade, even though it had been working well and was activated.

It all depends on the state of the OS you are trying to upgrade.
