Copy/Paste file from host to virtual machine

Post by tot94 »

Hello,

I can't copy and paste file through my host to my virtual machine. The fact is I don't want my virtual machine to be connected on Internet. So I've google on Internet how to copy file manually. So i've modified Configuration > General > Advanced :

share clipboard -> bidirectionnal
drag'n'drop -> bidirectional

I can copy and paste text from one to another but I can't do it with my files !! Where am i wrong ?

Thanks

What is the guest? What is the VirtualBox version? Did you install the Guest Additions?

It strikes me as odd the user never heard of the guest additions since he would have to have them installed for the shared clipboard to work.

This is to be expected. You cannot copy/paste files, only simple text and simple graphics. This is not your Windows Explorer, it's a different thing altogether. Plus, as others have noticed, you already have the Guest Additions (GAs) installed. The fact that you have not shared with us what your guest is, leads me to believe that it is one of the latest Linux distros that come already with GAs pre-installed.

  1. Your images are small and cut so we can't see the whole picture clearly.
  2. You should be attaching your images here, not on some 3rd party site. See "Upload attachment" at the bottom of your reply.
  3. This problem that you're having has absolutely nothing to do with "Copy/Paste file from host to virtual machine" as the title of this thread indicates. You should have started a new topic.
  4. Read Ch. 4.2.2 Guest Additions for Linux for the proper way to install the GAs in your Ubuntu guest. Note any error messages that the installation might generate. In full detail. If it fails, please let us know.
  5. Read Ch. 4.3 Shared folders and especially Ch. 4.3.2 Automatic mounting. The shared folder should be under "/media/sf_***".
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.

1&2.Click on the image in order to see them larger.
3. No it is still about copy/paste filte from host to VMs machine. However, I've started a new topic.
4.I've install Guest Additions in Ubuntu by running the CD VBOXADDITIONS_5.0.6103037
5.I don't see the folder from my Ubuntu at /media ...

I tried it. Didn't work. Did you try it? The 1st image is cropped and the 2nd is scaled down. Readable, but scaled. It still doesn't matter, because a lot of people will NOT go to 3rd party sites, that's why I said you should attach them here.

I fail to see how failing to see a shared folder has anything at all to do with Copy/Paste...

So, I assume you read the relevant chapter, you followed the instructions and there were no errors, right?

1&2.Yes I've scaled all the pic. I will attach them now.

3.A shared folder to copy/paste files from the host throught the VMs, anyway

4.On my Ubuntu, I've done "Insert Guest Additions CD Image"
I have run the install.
If I click again on "Insert Guest Addition CD Image", a windows appears with this detail error :
(VERR_PDM_MEDIA_LOCKED)

Is it normal ?

5.Then, I've make a shared folder C:\Users\TKNJ6322\Downloads with auto-mount:yes and access:full.
From my VM window, Device/Shared Folders/Shared Folders Setting, I can see C:\Users\TKNJ6322\Downloads

EDIT : I don't know why but it works...
osboxes@osboxes:~$ sudo ls /media/sf_Downloads/
[sudo] password for osboxes:
7zip.exe putty.exe
