VB update quandry

I am running 4.4.30, and I am not getting inundated by the "a new version of Virtual Box is available" message. I know .32 is out, 5.0, and 5.0.6 as well; the last one fixing USB issues that El Capitan! introduced.
Questions:
1) should I just download it and install it?
1a) if so, should I uninstall the current version first? Someone mentioned uninstalling from Terminal. I am uncomfortable with that, as I don't know what that will take with it.
2) ... and, why did I not get an update message/
Hmmm....

You are running 4.3.30 and I'm not sure where you saw a 4.3.32 version but I can't find it. As far as installing VB 5.0.6, I've installed it on three different Macs and it works well.
You may want to uninstall 4.3.30 first. You can do that by dbl-clicking the VirtualBox_Uninstall.tool assuming you kept it. If not re-download the dmg.
As far as the update notification, that can be hit and miss. I assume it has to do when and if the server is updated.

Like I said, it has always inundated me for updates. (Thought I saw a .32 somewhere along the way.) Not that I mind. But, uninstalling first has never been something that I have done, and I have been here since 3.x something like 3-1/2 years ago.
Why should I uninstall?

I don't normally uninstall first on OSX hosts. But when there is a major update such as VB 4.* to VB 5.* that is what is recommended. If you choose not to and something goes awry, don't blame me.

I most certainly wouldn't blame you.
Will my settings be retained? My shared folder, etc.?

Thanks again. It was a little scary, as before, I could install the GA later. I almost fainted when VB could not create a session. AND, I had to quit VB in order for double-clicking on the GA would install through VB (I thought that was odd).
But, I have my 64GB PNY jump drive connected. Yeah!
Many thanks.

FWIW, I don't really understand what you did. The guest additions are part of the VirtualBox package. Did you mean the Extension Pack? if so, you don't need to double click on the file to install it although you can. But I'm glad you have it working, if only by accident.

Yes, that is what I meant.
