Exit code -1073741819 (0xc0000005) virtual box.

Post by gagan »

I installed latest version of Virtualbox - 5.0.6 on windows 7 64 bit. When I try to run the cloudera VM, I am getting this error.
I have also attached the logs. I can't enable hardware virtualization on my machine since it's on corporate network.

Can anyone please help?

The virtual machine 'cloudera-quickstart-vm-5.4.2-0-virtualbox' has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code -1073741819 (0xc0000005). More details may be available in 'C:\Users\gthaparl\VirtualBox VMs\cloudera-quickstart-vm-5.4.2-0-virtualbox\Logs\VBoxHardening.log'.

There are lots of "Lacks WinVerifyTrust" posts in the log pointing to common Windows files. I think that means your physical PC has one or more Windows Updates that have damaged the authenticity certificate database that the OS keeps. Virtualbox uses these certificates to check if the files are not hacked before VB allows the files to influence VB. Since the Windows Updates have damaged the database, VB can't know if the files are good and so won't run.

These links were posted by Mpack in another thread, for the two known updates that damaged the database. Microsoft apparently has a work-around for one of them:

Thank you. Can I go to the older version of Virtual Box? I don't think I can change windows updates since it's a corporate machine.

The last version of Virtualbox that didn't have the hardening was 4.3.12 You have to make sure no malware gets on your PC - there is a way malware can get higher permissions to do damage if Virtualbox lets it inject itself into Virtualbox processes. The hardening stops that from happening. Also, the most recent guest OSs may not run well or at all. Up to Windows 8.1 does run in 4.3.12.

You may be able to make a case to your IT folks to investigate those bad updates - I'm sure they don't want hosed certificate databases floating about...

It's running fine on 4.3.12 but how do I make sure no malware gets on my PC. I have antivirus and my system is on corporate network. Do you think it's enough?

The quintessential question in PC-world. Like "Why are we here?" and "Why do bad things happen to good people?" for humans.

keeping the anti-virus up to date, Safe surfing, No clicking on unexpected links in emails, etc. Nothing 100%, as you probably know.
