Apologies in advance, I am so not a techie!!!

For a college assignment I need to download a Virtual Machine and associated SIC tools. The problem is when I downloaded the Virtualbox the system has no bootable device, correct me if I'm wrong but I assume this is down to me having no OS in place on the VM ? The Laptop I am using has no CD/DVD and when I go to download an OSI file from my laptop I am unable to find one. I had the same problem trying to download VMware...please help me, I am at my wits end here :(

I am running Windows 10 if that helps....

You aren't supplying enough information for anyone to help. I would say your best bet is to ask your professor or fellow classmates exactly what you are suppose to download.

A VM is a blank PC - it does not come bundled with any OS. When you create a VM you can tell VirtualBox to make the virtual hardware compatible with any one of a selection of supported OS's, but you still have to install that OS yourself.

ISO images of the install CD/DVDs are easily available for Linux. Obviously it is not so easy to get your hands on an ISO for a proprietary OS - but e.g. Microsoft does have free programs for students (i.e. DreamSpark). As Lou says, ask around.
