Mouse all amplified screwy in MOH Breakthrough

Post by brycesteiner »

I'm not sure what is going on but after upgraded to 5.0x from 4.3.26, the mouse is extremely amplified in it's speed. 4.3.26 works perfectly for games but with 5.0.6 the mouse moves at supersonic speeds based from the bottom right corner of the screen. I can't even get to game place to know how that works because moving the mouse even an 1/8" will make it jump clear across the screen.
I've tried host+i because funny things like that would fix it before but that was a different situation. The mouse just hung on the edges then. This is just in the first screen. I have never installed 3d drivers in any of the settings and haven't needed to.
Anything you can think of that might need changed in the newer settings on Virtualbox?

thanks!

There are many differences from VB 4.* and VB 5.*. It's doubtful any settings change will help. You could always roll back to the version that worked. Depends on how important the game is to you.

I do realize that changes would be made. Sometimes it's just a matter of reenabling something like that.

One other update to this: Age of Empires II seems to work okay.

You didn't mention what version of OSX you are running or what guest you are trying to run MOH on. I can say, if the guest is XP support for XP has been dropped so afaik there will be no more changes to VirtualBox 5 to accommodate XP so what ever works is about all the will work. If your guest runs normally and AOE II works okay, I doubt anything will change in VB 5 that will solve your MOH problem. You might get lucky however and someone who is running OSX and VB 5 will also be running MOH and made it work. The chances of that happening are very small indeed but good luck.

I'm running both Yosemite and El Capitan. Before this week I was still running Mountain Lion as the host on most of my Macs.
The guest is XP SP3
I did reinstall 4.3.26 to make sure it wasn't something with the host and the games played fine once again. I then tried decided to try the 4.3.26 guest additions in 5.0.6 and the mouse worked much better and even got it to play, but it still wasn't as good. Oh well.

I saw XP wasn't going to be the default Windows guest but I didn't know they were dropping support for it.

This brings up my next question: Can you have two different version of Virtualbox installed at the same time?

The answer is simple: No.

It seems the way to do this would be to make a separate partition and keep Mountain Lion with 4.3.26 and dedicate just for these games.

That wouldn't be two copies of VirtualBox installed at the same time. That would be the equivalent of having VB installed on two machines.

Stating the obvious, except the equivalent of two machines would mean a lot more space used for recreational use of about once a month because it would actually be two machines--not one, which is the real reason we all use virtualbox here. We don't want two, three or even more different computers on our desk when we can do it all on one physical machine.
I was just hoping there might be a way to have multiple installations of Virtualbox on the same OS. Even it one was installed under one user and another version on another user.

I was just pointing out socratis was correct. If you are going to dual boot your Mac, why not install XP in Bootcamp? No doubt the games would run better.

You can't do that. The fundamental reason that you can't do it is that VirtualBox is not a simple application like Calculator or TextEdit. It installs kernel drivers, and you can only have only one of those, not multiple versions.

I have to qualify what I said earlier. Depending on the Mac model you may or may not be able to run XP in Bootcamp. You may need a newer version of Windows.

I kind of figured that. I just thought someone may have done it successfully. I did see something interesting when doing this today. One of the installations gave me the option to install it just for this user or for all users. "Just for this user" was grayed out though.

I ended up making the installation on all my macs work just fine and all they have to do is hold down option on boot and select "games" and it does everything else. I didn't even have to reinstall virtual machine, it just used it from the other partition.

That wouldn't be a bad idea, but then I have to reinstall everything and that would take all afternoon for each computer. With a virtual machine restore in minutes over a network and I can have everything consistent between all computers. It doesn't get better than this.

As for game play, Virtualbox plays Medal of Honor: Breakthrough the best of any PC I've ever had as far as smooth and graphics--even the 2010 iMac plays it well. The biggest issue is it doesn't fit the screen like it does on an actual PC. I'm not sure why, but that's okay. I prefer to play it on a smaller screen because I can see more without having to look so far from one side to the other.
Age of Empires plays well too. It's our favorite games.
